Hi again, I have a question regarding types of massage oils. We currently use a grapeseed oil and also Emu oil. The question is have any of you guys found oils similiar to Emu oil but less costly? Just looking for suggestions and feedback.Thanks Mismassageplanet.net

I use Emu Oil also. I tend to use it just for clients with problem areas... not as something for all over massage.
I tend to use it on the face, sometimes the hands and feet as well.

This is one of the most reasonable priced places for emu oil products that my family has found on the web.

My niece uses Emu Oil daily as a afmassageplanet.netath moisturizer... she started using it after she developed a couple stretch marks... and wanted me to help her find some cheaper than the $32 per 2 oz. container she found on one website!

I have had a massage using Jojoba oil though from a MT student I mentor... I wonder if that would be a possibility for you to consider?

Similar in what way Mimi?I really don't know of anything which has all the qualities that Emu oil does. I first bought it for therapeutic massages for a friend of mine. He had an accident at work which resulted in damage to his right arm. The orthopedic surgeon said it was basically, Filleted. After 3 surgeries and a skin graft, and after months of physical therapy I finally got my hands on him after workman's comp. had turned him loose saying he was as good as he was ever going to get.He was unsatisfied with the ROM he had post accident and we decided to try and get some of his lost ROM back. But massaging him with my regular massage oil was really difficult because as quickly as I could apply it, it would be absorbed into the skin as if I had never put any on.  I would think I would have enough on... only to try an effluerage and come to a screetching halt!  I then remembered hearing that Emu Oil was good for burns and scar tissue and then purchased some Emu Oil from Heaven Scent Gardens to use just with this one client.  It made all the difference in the world! And because keeping it moisturized was a big issue...and it was getting towards Autumn I gave him the rest of the bottle to apply twice a day to the scarred area.  I heard later from his wife... that she had decided to sneak a couple drops and put them on the dry skin of her face. She was sold... and asked me to escort her to the place so she could buy her own... her hubby caught her snitching his... so I did, in the best interests of their maritial harmony.  I also used it when my mother broke her hip about 4 years ago.  The home health care nurse said it was the best healed scar she'd seen. And when my Mom passed away in April... the medical examiner totally missed the incision all together!  (It was just a thin white line.)I have friends who swear by it's anti-inflammatory abilities... good for arthritis in the fingers, etc.  And as I have stated, one teenage neice uses it to prevent stretch marks and treat her dry skin... and 2 of my neice-in-laws have used it during their pregnancies.It usually only takes about 3-4 drops to do a client's face... so a little goes a long way.I can understand your reluctance to use something which is not plant based... but it's a good product if you have a client who would benefit from it's therapeutic effects.  I personally like the thicker texture which emu oil has... that's why I normally use an oil gel when I do massage.  And I recommend it to my clients when I think it is appropriate.

maestra,I will do some research, but on a lark that you may know off hand... can the emu oil help with psoriasis?Also, do people find after they have used it for a period of time, the body gets "immune" to it?Thanks for any replies.

Texas-gal,Ancedotal evidence says that it's good for people with psoriasis, but the only person I know who has psoriasis bad isn't into Any kind of Alternative or Complimentary medicine so to my knowledge he's never tried it.As for building up an immunity, I couldn't say. A couple of my family members who have used it on their face daily have mentioned they broke out. Guess it's not noncomedogenic... or what ever the term is. Then again, they might have used more than was necessary, some of them in my family have a tendency to do that.  Others have reported that it helped them with cracks on the end of their thumbs or heels... it has a lot of uses and because a little goes a long way a 2 oz. bottle lasts a surprisingly long time (even for my family members). lol

Is there really a good "unscented" jojoba oil?  I really prefer the consistency of this oil, but after a few months of using it I couldn't stand the smell anymore.  (The brand I used was Hobacare.)  Does anyone know about any "unscented" good brands?  Thanks!   Kay

i use Hobacare also. love the way it handles. but i agree with you getting tired of the smell. i have used it for 2 years. most of the time i mixed lavender with it now after 2 years im sick of lavender.. maybe you could try differnt scents to mix with it. i made a batch up yesterday using spearmint. just to have a change of scent

I use jojoba, but not Hobacare brand, and I can hardly even notice any smell. Maybe a different brand would have less odour?  I have some that is pretty well cold pressed virgin jojoba and it only smells slightly more than the more refined jojoba I generally use, so I'm not sure why the Hobacare brand smells.   I make up aromatherapy blends using the jojoba because it smells so little compared to vegetable oils (and all the other pluses of absorbs easily, feels nice, washes easily)

I am a big Emu oil fan. I didn't happen over night and it took me a very long time and a really bad sun burn to even try the stuff because the thought of using an animal fat on my body really grossed me out. But now I have to say that the benefits of Emu oil are far better than any oil on the market and I can't live without it. Did you know that some hospitals have begun using Emu in their burn units as Emu has been found to in both healing and in pain reflief. My mother used Emu on her tummy after major sugery and she has virtually no scars today. My dh uses an Emu Massage oil with Arnica that really helps his back pain. Greattlakes, the vitamin shop owner was doing some wishful thinking there. Emu oil comes from the slaughtered flesh -- specifically the fat on the back of the bird. Emus are part of the animal husbandry industry (like cattle, chickens, sheep, etc.) Every part of the bird is sold: Meat, leather & the fat (refined into oil). Here's a link to more information:

Half the time on boards, it all depends who's reading at the time. Although I'm sure some MT's are vegetarian, not everyone is. (I'm not!) It's funny ... I've had clients tell me they assumed I was vegetarian simply because they associate me with good health & wellness. I know they also picture me doing hours of yoga at the end of every workday. I imagine they'd be shocked to see me eat a twinkie or drink a beer. : (Actually, I love yoga, and try to keep twinkies to a bare minimum. But I'm far from perfect!).

Since I eat meat, the thought of emu oil doesn't bother me. In fact, I think emus in general are treated a lot better than many farm animals. They're not a huge industry, so they don't spend their lives stuck in cages. They're generally allowed to roam free-range & since they're promoted as health food, many emu farms use organic practices.

I don't think I'd use emu oil as my massage oil, but there's no harm in passing the information along that it's supposed to help prevent scar formation & treat many skin conditions.

No, even being in possession of a feather plucked out of the forest that fell out of the eagle due to natural causes, is a bad bad bad. Fines, I"ve even heard of jail time.
