Chronic back injury and severe pain

I'm looking for a bit of advice and perhaps insight. My brother has suffered from chronic and severe back pain for years. Basically, he originally slipped a disc, had an operation, had a car crash, which damaged the original operation site and caused scar tissue to attach to the nerve endings on his lower spine. He's had scans, probes, and is now on morphine. We are at our wits' end with what medicine can do for him, as nothing seems viable nor to hand.

Anyone got any idea of what treatment may be available. The doctors seem worse than useless.

Have him try Gabapentin tis the only thing that has ever EVER got rid of my nerve and back pain Morphine just made me silly but i still had a bad back...........

He's on that. Gives him speech problems and nightmares. the real nightmare is the pain. He had a laminectomy in 1995 and was fine until a car crash in 1998 when the site got damaged and now scar tissue adhesions on the spinal column. We are just about desperate. Does anyone know if any kind of funding is in place for private treatment in severe cases such as this.... I'm sure I'm being naive, but the NHS is just about useless. My poor brother is just about suicidal.

Hi folks - bin rather busy.

Sounds like your brother has what's referred to as nerve root tethering. I wouldn't disagree with trying cranial osteopathy, but do have another suggestion.

There are some treatments and exercises based on the idea of stretching the nerves & nerve roots. Whether that's what actually happens is less important, as I suspect what actually happens in such a case is that the connective tissue that has adhered to the nerve root is stretched. Either way that should take the tension off and stop the nerve firing off innapropriately.

The sooner done the better as an area that is in constant irritation can sprout extra nerve endings locally, which just makes it worse.
It's probably going to painful to do, but better to get it over with sooner rather than later. I'd probably dry needle the area first to reduce excessive muscle tone & numb the area, or maybe use a Scenar device pre osteopathic treatment for those that have a problem with acupuncture needles.

I'm sorry Gabapentin has not worked, but for most it's trial and error with the dosage and yes side effects are common but tbh i'd rather have the 1's im getting than crawling around the floor like i have for the last 5 years. A few conversations with people that arnt there and eating everything i see to me is very worth it.....

It may be worth trying some other gentle bodywork like Emmett technique or Bowen Technique which are very good at pain relief and relaxing muscles.
