Growing up, Bettina Hewitt's family followed a natural, alternative approach to medicine and overall wellness, which she continued as an adult. She was so inspired by her upbringing that she decided to become a licensed massage therapist.
"This was a natural path for me to take. My focus is whole client wellness with an emphasis on massage. I incorporate essential oils into the massage and find out where their stressors are at, whether it's an injury or tension," Hewitt said.
Hewitt has used oils for three years and took an essential oil/aromatherapy class. She now teaches how to use the oils through Body Wisdom in Urbandale.
Hewitt spoke with The Des Moines Register about Hewitt Wellness and Massage.
Q: Who are your clients?
A: I see a bit of everyone. I've worked with high schoolers who have sports injuries up through the elderly who want to stay healthy. There are a lot of professionals with tension working in an office or at a computer all day long, those that spend a lot of time on the phone or looking down, that I work with.
Q: What massage technique do you use?
A: I blend my techniques to treat each client individually. My massage is designed to help them feel better when they leave.
Q: Do you offer massages outside the health clinic site?
A: I have a couple of clients who cannot get to me, so I'll take my table to them. I also have a massage chair that I can take to an office setting.
Q: Why are essential oils an important part of your practice?
A: It's a way for an individual to take a proactive approach to their own healthcare. Different oils do different things.
Q: What do you love about owning a business?
A: I love being in charge of my own day and spending extra time on a client if he or she needs it. If they have concerns that need addressed, I can spend 15 extra minutes with that client.
Q: What compliments do your clients give you?
A: I have one client who is a marathoner who has said great things. I take the pain to a point then release it.
Q: What do you like about your location?
A: It's close to several busy intersections and has easy access.
