Hi Alli
I am an aromatherapist & have worked with special needs - (children) Ditto what stormdeva says, especially pay attention to things like epilepsy, allergies, nut allergies etc, remenber all contraindications. Everyone is different, and has different needs, there isn't really "a ceartin way" to be with special needs other than to treat them individually which you would do anyway whether special needs or not.........
Are they in a wheelchair?, have walking aids? or need help/assistance from a carer? you may have to adapt to suit various physical/mental needs (my client could not get on a couch at all, so i massaged her laying all snug on her bed which was comfortable and she would'nt fall if she had a fit as she had cot sides, it was handy if she nodded off to sleep as she often did as id just tuck her up all cosy afterwards so she could stay assleep). Also if someone cannot talk to communicate whether they like or dislike an oil, remember to look out for the sometimessubtlest of signs as to whether they like the oil you are offering them, they may turn away or frown if they do not like it, or smile, or try to grab and eat the bottle if they love it!! nostrill twitches, "big" inhales from them when you offer the oil, facial expressions that kind of thing. Some signs are obvious, others less so. I have worked with clients who cannot talk, and you can still tell whether they like an oil you are offering them by these signs they communicate with, again everyones signs are different. You can tell whether they are comfortable or not during the massage again by their signs, facial expressions etc if they cannot talk. Alli it is all very very interesting and hugely rewarding working with special needs, it truly is.
In my experience, special needs can really benefit hugely from having aromatherapy treatments, whether it be for relaxation, physical needs, or both and dont forget to enjoy!!
Hope i have been a bit of help
love and blessings
