Aromatherapy and Pregnancy

Hi Everyone,

I have a client who has come to me for aromatherapy treatments to aid fertility, she has been using lavender and rose, but I just wanted to see what anyone else suggests. Rose has aphrodisiac properties but is also an emmenagogue, so would everyone think it was good to use?? Has anyone else any other blends that have been successful.
Val Wormwood in the Fragrant Pharmacy suggests cypress, clary sage, geranium, fennel and Rom chamomile for infertility, but elsewhere clary sage, fennel are contra-indicated for pregnancy.
A lot of the books you read have different ideas, so I'm just after some practical advice.

I'd say don't use Rose.

According to my textbooks (I'm a childbirth educator) basil, black pepper oil, cedarwood, clary, coriander, hyssop, jasmine, juniper, marjoram, oregano, myrrh, peppermint, rose, rosemary, sage and thyme are all contraindicated in pregnancy so I would definitely avoid them when trying to conceive.

Get yourself a copy of "Aromatherapy in Pregnancy and Labour" by Sharon Murphy. It's a very useful little book

IMHO you can use rose ok, also I personaly use clary sage for infertility. You have to remember that your client is not pregnant

Completly agree. But the minute she finds out she is pregnant, you should stop using any emmenagogues, and any oil you do use should only be in half the usual amounts. Absolutely everything that goes on or in the body goes to the baby.

From her cycles, you should be able to work out roughly her ovulation dates. This is 12-14 days before the first day of the monthly period. Any variation in the cycle length usually takes place in the first half of the menstrual month, before ovulation.

So you could give her one or two treatments in the first half of the month - one as her period starts and the next a week or so later and then not treat again unless or until she has another period.
