Aromatherapy books

Hi all,
I have just qualified as a beauty therapist (to hnd level). This qualifies me to carry out aromatherapy, etc, treatments. However, since coming on here, I feel I don't know anything!

I was wondering if any of you could recommend any books that I could get (preferably in the shops as opposed to online since I am unwilling to get another credit card, y'know, the student thing and all). I have the a-z of aromatherapy by shirley price and that's it.

Hi Linzi. I was under the impression that beauty therapists only used pre-blended oils?

The aromatherapy courses last a minimum of nine months and cover 40+ essential oils, their uses, blending, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, contraindications and more, so I think you would really need to do an aromatherapy course to practice it properly. Prior to that you need a certificate in anatomy and physiology and also the massage qualification to get on the course.

I suppose what I am saying is that aromatherapists work quite hard to get their qualifications and essential oils are quite powerful and should only be used by qualified therapists. They can have profound effects when used correctly. I have come across therapists who have used the wrong oils on people due to a lack of proper training and have had adverse effects, ie skin reactions, making people hyper etc etc.

I really do advise you to be careful as people coming to you would expect you to be qualified and you need to check your insurance on this one.

Sorry to put a dampner on it for you but I do feel quite strongly about it.

I understand you feel very strongly about this and I understand you have worked hard to get where you are, as have I, however, just to clarify.

I do have an anatomy and physiology certificate, and I have done other body massage. No, I don't use just pre-blended oils. My aromatherapy course was a year long, and my training did include their uses, blending, etc

So, no, I'm not just a beauty therapist. I was just wondering if any of you could recommend any good books, y'know bed time lit,

The Fragrant Pharmacy by Valerie Ann Wormwood is a good reference, but bear in mind that her blends are very strong and you probably have to reduce the amount of essential oils in a blend by half.

I can understand Candies reaction to your 1st post. I would have said more or less the same thing. But now you have cleared the fog I'll shut up.

The directory of essential oils by Wanda Sellar. ISBN 0 85207 239 2. good reference book
Aromatherapy Massage by Clare Maxwell-Hudson ISBN 0-7513-0740-8. Nice book to experiment from, lovely recipes.

Sorry. Now that you have made it clearer I understand.

Don't have any gripes about 'beauty therapists'! Everybody does what they do and all that, but did misunderstand you.

There are tons of books. Will need to have a think and get back to you. Will sift through my groaning book shelfs!

Would recommend though: Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit.
