Aromatherapy Sprays

I've made myself a lovely Lemon & Lime E.O Room spray today, which smells absolutely lovely and just the trick for my bathroom. As I refuse to purchase the chemically, synthetic and unhealthy commerial stuff. [:'(]

Anyway, has anyone got any other personal favourites they use for around the home to share? [sm=grouphug.gif]

I'm currently using a lime and eucalyptus one, as we have had two bouts of flu in the family and are feeling really rough and have persistent coughs.

I also use a spray of Myrrh and Tea Tree in my not very well ventilated bathroom!

How do you make your sprays?

I make a shoe spray using Ti Tree and Bergamot. - I encourage my teenagers to use it in their shoes when they take them off (let them dry overnight) - it keeps smelly feet to a minimum (when they remember to use it!!)

That sounds lovely. How do you make your sprays?

I have a couple of bottles with spray attachments, and I use Vodka (shock horror!!!) to "fix" the essential oils inboiled water.

I save my old pump action hair styling spray bottles - 125ml size, I reckon if they're made to withstand the components of the styling spray, they'll be ok with essential oils - certainly don't seem to have had any adverse reactions so far and been usind them for many years.
Put a slurp - about 1cm (probably 25- 30ml) of cheap high proof vodka in (don't think I'd want to drink it[&:]), put about 30 drops in total of essential oils and top up with filtered water.
Haven't come across using boiled water - what properties does it have compared to normal? I tend to use filtered cos I have an undersink filter so if I've ggot the choice of using that or normal chlorine (etc) smelling water, I'd rather pick filtered.

Hi there,

I use boiled water for two reasons

a) It is what I was taught
and
b) It is sterile - apparently distilled water is best, but you have to pay good money for that!

I never thought of using filtered, which is a great idea, except I don't have one of those filter things.

I have been known to empty out my Flash/Cif sprays to make up aromatherapy sprays instead!!!!!

Distilled water lacks oxygen, so sometimes causes the blend to go cloudy. I use a medical grade surfactant to bind the oils before adding boiled water.

What is a medical grade thingumy? Where do I get them? My bottles are brown glass, so I can't see whether it has gone cloudy or not!!!!!

The medical grade surfactant is Polysorbate 20. I get mine from Katseye Blends.

The efficacy of the blend isn't affected by the cloudiness, so if you can't see it, it's not a problem. I just sometimes use rollerballs which I can only buy clear.
