Back Pain

Hiya All,

I have been told i have got a 'Severe defect in my neural arches between L1 and S5' which apparantly as i havent had back surgery have prob had since birth, ( am now 41!!!)

Is there anyone else that has this problem?, or now of someone who has?, i have had physio which helps at the time but the problem is still there, am now awaiting back pain classes, which they they dont really know what to do with me as they havent come across the problem before, ( this is the hospital!!!)

Any help would really be appreciated,

I could do with some more info. What is the actual problem you experience? What does the pain feel like? How often? Where do you feel it? What brings it on? How long has it been going on? Be good to hear a little background.
Many therapies are great for back pain. Have you considered seeing an osteopath or a traditional acupuncturist? Either one would certainly be my first port of call for lower back pain.
L1 - S5. That's quite a big range! It must be horrible. Hope you find something that helps.

Thanks for the reply, as for the pain, its like someone is sticking pins in me on the right side at the top of my cheek, it sometimes sends pains down my leg, a bit like sciatica, but it isnt a shooting pain, i cant stand for a long time as it gives me a dull ache, i have to bend over like i am stretching the muscle, i cant sit for a long time as its painful, i did try for disability benefil due to not being able to walk very far, but do not qualify as i dont need care during the night, despite that i toss and turn all nite cos i cant get comfy.
No one has really showed me what part is missing!!, as no one has ever heard of it!, it doesnt run in my family , and no one has any idea

The doc refered me to the physio dept at the hospital for which i had to wait 9 months for, they gave me gentle exercises, i have had a tens machine, i have had crutches, i have had the cheek of my backside taped up in a v shape with a bit across the top, like a upside down triangle to take the strain of my muscle which app over the years had compensated for the pain and had tightened up completely.
They have now give me extra large tubigrips to pull up to support the cheeks of my backside, ( very fetching i must say), and have sent me off with a wait for back pain classes.......
They dont really know what to do with me, they have opted to send me to classes before sending me to a consultant as they will prob want to do invasive surgery, but if it takes the pain away then i really dont care what they do, because as far as i understand it, if i have this pain, then no amount of exercise etc or pain relief that they give me,will cure the problem, as the nerves are still uncovered!!,

( sorry to give you my life story).

This sounds like the kind of back pain that an osteopath or traditional acupuncturist would be able to treat. Have you had or considered this kind of treatment in addition to the conventional help you are getting?
I know that many kinds of back pain can respond well to these treatments. As far as acupuncture is concerned, I would expect the more intense prickly pain to respond quite quickly, whilst the achey pain may take longer.
Hey - it's worth persuing something like this! Pain needn't be there indefinitely.

I agree with Aragorn on this definately worth trying one or both of these approaches. Back pain clinics usually give excercises, which you have and work on psychological coping stratergies, from what I gather. THe latter may be valid, but it's not going to help your back.

If you see an osteopath it would be helpful to get your GP to write down exactly what the report from the scan said, word for word, but not essential.

Are you sure it's not between L5 & S1 as this would just be one level, which sounds more like your symptom pattern.
