Another thing you can do is get some books on making products Neals Yard Remedies have a book entitled "Recipes for Natural Beauty" ISBN 1-902463-66-8 that looks ok.
Also do some market research yourself - go along to any store and look at the products on sale that you wish to make and try it out for yourself - noting the ingredients of course you will not have the exact amounts, but they will be listed in descending order and you can modify and experiment yourself.
