Best oils to use for jaw ache

Hi everyone
I was wondering if any of our aromatherapists on HP have any suggestions for the best oils to use on the jaws? I have a client who wants something to rub on the jaws as he is suffering from jaw ache - otherwise known as Tempormandibular syndrome. I can find nothing in my books or on the internet other than the symptoms of the condition.

Well, not something I have thought of really, just would massage the area and it would help. But...oils that certainly will help will be a fairly strong dilution of peppermint and some roman chamomile. Peppermint is anaesthetic and really does kill pain. Make sure that it is a really good oil though from a reputable supplier. Suggest you put five drops peppermint and two chamomile in 5ml of carrier and massage in. Hope that helps.

This condition can be caused by prolonged stess and includes teeth grinding or clenching. It also can be caused by joint diseases (arthritis, ankylosis, neoplasms or lupus) or fractures and dislocations from trauma. The most common cause is prolonged stress. It causes pain, muscles spasm and changes in jaw movement.

Moist heat will help induce muscle relaxation and enhance analgesia and cold will help to reduce muscle spasm and inflammation. often jaw exercises will help to stretch the muscles.

I would be careful about using peppermint on the face as it can be an irritant, on the delicate skin of the face, even good quality peppermint (sorry candie), but would agree that massage of any kind would really be of benefit. Indian head/face massage can be of great help here as it concentrates on all the tight areas most often associated with stress of this kind.

I would suggest that you use 1 drop of Roman Chamomile (anti-inflammatory)and 1 drop of Marjoram (antispasmodic) in 5ml of comfrey oil known for its anti-inflammatory properties. You could also try hot or cold compressing depending whether you need to relax the jaw or help with the spasm.

Thank you candie and essence - very helpful. I have mixed a 1% dilution of a massage cream for my client to try using peppermint,chamomile and lavender,as they are all analgesics. I hope it will help - will let you know what happens! I was rather worried about using peppermint on the face therefore I just mixed a 1% dilution. I will also suggest the Indian head massage to him.

Just wanted you to know that my client is so impressed with the cream - he's been better since using it! He was a bit sceptical at first but now thinks I would be a candidate for a ducking stool if I lived a few centuries ago!!!
