Bipolar/Manic Depression with Aromatherapy

Hi all,

A friend of a friend has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder also known as manic depression.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of treating the condition with Aromatherapy. and if so, could you share any information about the best course of treatment.

I've only been practicing since January, so not really had much experience with this condition, only really mild forms of stress and anxiety.

Diffusing or directly inhaling essential oils can have an immediate positive impact on mood. Olfaction is the only sense that can have direct effects on the limbic region of the brain. Studies at the University of Vienna19 have shown that some essential oils and their primary constituents (cineol) can stimulate blood flow and activity in the emotional regions of the brain.

When looking at bipolar disorder, and the use of essential oils, you need to consider mania and depression individually. For Mania you need peace and calming oils, for depression you need uplifting and invigorating oils.

MANIA

Single Oils:
Valerian, Roman Chamomile, Lavender

DEPRESSION

Clinical studies at the Department of Psychiatry at the Mie University of Medicine showed that lemon not only reduced depression but reduced stress when inhaled.

Single Oils:
Jasmine absolute, lemon, sage, frankincense, peppermint

EO Applications:

INHALATION:

An alternative to using essential oils would be NLP. Someone running a crazy 8 (technical term for bipolar) is simply running a strategy. NLP can uncover the equation for this strategy, and program a new strategy in its place.

I'll try a blend in a massage first, as I think it's relaxation that's a prob at the mo - but obviously it varies.
