Contra-indications for IHM

Can someone advise me on this?

Is being on medication e.g antidepressants a contra-indiaction to an Indian Head Massage? I was just wondering because a group of us were discussing this the other day. Some were saying yes and doctors consent should be sort but some others would treat as it is a relaxing and stress relieving treatment.

Can someone help us resolve this discussion?

I wouldn't have thought that being on anti-depressantsis a contra-indication, but it may be advisable for the client to ask their GP rather than ask the GP directfor consent to treat - knowing some of my GP friends you would have a long and fruitless wait for a reply!

I've just revised contra-indications and, whilst meds are not a contra-indication as such, they should be viewed as a caution. The medication may alter how the client responds to the massage and it's always best to check with the GP if you are unsure about how a particular medication may affect the client.

I didn't think that being on antidepressants would be a contra-indication. When i looked on mynotes that i was given from college being on medication was not even included!!

Thanks too Sarah7. Thats a real help too! My worry would be carrying out a treatment and thinking they would be OK and they felt really bad and had to stop the treatment halfway through.

In April I'm doing a course on Indian head massage and will ask about doing a treatment on someone that is on anti depressants. The reply will be interesting because I'm currently taking them and have been for about 9 months now. I have Indian head massages every 1 to 2 weeks and have found that I now go deeper although this could be because I'm more relaxed or used to them. Will admit that without the massages I don't think I could of coped with cutting down on my tablets which is something that I would love to stop soon but know that it will take time. Having a IHM tomorrow and feel I really need it with the feeling of tension across my shoulders, I'm in quite a stressful job and the release is great afterwards [sm=1syellow1.gif].

I've never asked my doctor about having IHM or any other alternative therapy, I just told him what I was doing and if he didn't like it then tough [sm=devil-smiley-002.gif].

One of my clients has weaned herself off Prozac (after 12 years!!), and now takes St Johns Wort, as prescribed by her herbalist - would this count as a contra-indication? She is also on a whole list of other herbal preparations. ((Perhaps Cis could ask the question about herbal treatmentwhen you start your course)). The St Johns Wort has made a whole world of difference to her, but her GP told her that it would have no effect!

My doctor does not believe in Reiki which I doand didn't really like it when I used homeopathic treatment's before my breakdown. Been thinking of using StJohn's Wort but ideally I'd love to stop taking anything, will have to have a word with my new doctor who is taking over in April and in the mean time I'll continue with my beloved IHM

It is not in a lot of courses as a contra-indication. But it should be.

I have found that as with most things in life there are varing levels and types of antidepressants.

IMHO we all know how relaxingIHM can be. Butit effects our emotions IMHO it is this that causes a problem (if you have had no counselling/listeningskills).

Of course the other side of the coin is that IHM can also be a stimulant, again that could cause a problem.

To Be honest I always feel that if you are not sure about any contra-indication situation, play safe and get them to check with their doctor and sign as having done so. None of us no matter what anyone says knows it all so please be safe (insurance)
