Coimbatore, September 21: In a significant crackdown on illegal sex services, Coimbatore police have shut down 72 spas and massage centres this year, targeting establishments that offered nude body massages with "happy endings" by women. These establishments, often disguised as legitimate businesses, have been found operating without proper licenses and employing women from various regions of India, particularly from the northeastern states. The crackdown is part of an ongoing effort to dismantle a network that exploits vulnerable individuals while violating the law.
According to a report by the Times of India, the illegal trade was predominantly run by individuals like Sikkandar Basha, who was recently arrested for orchestrating a widespread sex racket. Basha, alongside his accomplices, managed several spas across Coimbatore, allegedly generating monthly revenues of around INR 50 lakh. Investigations revealed that he had international connections, reportedly trafficking women from countries such as Russia for the purpose of exploitation. How Did These Sex Services Operate?
As per the report, the illegal sex trade in Coimbatore primarily operated under the guise of spas and massage centres, many of which were strategically located in bustling areas such as Gandhipuram, Peelamedu, and Hope College. These establishments offered services that included nude body massages with โhappy endings,โ drawing in clients through enticing advertisements on various online platforms. Once customers made contact, they were provided with photos of women available for selection, facilitating the illicit transactions. Charges for these services typically ranged from INR 2,000 to INR 3,000 per hour, with pricing varying based on the specific services chosen by customers. Many of these spas operated without the required licenses and often employed women from the northeastern states of India, who were lured by the promise of work but ultimately trapped in exploitative conditions. Investigations revealed that some operators were also involved in threatening and intimidating competitors. Basha's operations were not just limited to the spas; he was also implicated in financing local rowdy gangs to maintain control over the sex trade.
