Fatty tissue on elderly client

Hiya all!

One of my clients (76) has got large (about half golfball) swellings by her ankles.

Whilst in hospital she mentioned these to the doc and he said that it is just fat??!!

Does this happen alot with the elderly??

They do noy hurt when pressed but I am still unsure how to/if to treat her on this area.

Any of you experienced therapists have any advice/ knowledge about this.

I only say this because i have a few elderly clients who ankles swell and it is fairly easy to massage the lymphatic fluid up behind the knee and clear the swelling. Please feel free to send me a pic and I will have a look. My email address is [email protected].

I'd agree with Yasmin - my first thoughts would be a build up of lymphatic fluid. Ask your client to lie down with her feet slightly raised for about half an hour, and see if the swelling goes down. Also if the swelling gets worse as the day goes on it points to lympatic fluid.

Hi Trinity.

If you are going to massage areas of lymphatic swelling it is important that you start at the knees first and clear the way for working upwards from the ankles. Don't start at that ankles first. Hope that helps.
