Fb chat on iPod never alerts me?

On my iPod touch it never alerts me if people talk to me it never even shows because I go on fb on my computer and I can see they have tried to talk to me. It also doesn't always let me start the covo on fb chat it just says message cannot be sent at this time.
It does this type of thing on my iPod msn it never alerts me when someone talks and never let's me start the convo either. I have a good connection full battery and regulary update my apps when I can.
Please help:)
