Hi guys I need some advice, I cut my left hand on Saturday and I had to go to the hospital and receive 7 stiches the cut is on the outside of my hand close to my index finger. I am not going to be able to do any massages for about a week until the stiches are removed, but after that I will be bandaged. I was wondering if any of you have ever had that type of injury and if you would be inclined to wear a glove to protect myself and my client? What type of glove would work with using massage oil and still feel effective? I am looking for some advice and welcome your input.Thanks Emily :'(

Hi Emily,I did the same thing about 2 years ago so I know how you feel! I don't remember the exact type of glove I used but I do know they were powdered which was gross but probably necessary. Most of my clients said they couldn't tell much difference with the glove on but I did notice that it tended to catch on hair a little bit and it took some getting used to.I can't think of anything else right now, but will let you know if I do.By the way, were you washing dishes by any chance?Since I cut my hand I will never put my hand inside a glass again!!Good luck!Kirsten

I have seen little finger rubbers that cover just the finger instead of wearing an entire glove. A medical supply store might have them.Also, after the finger heals when you no longer require an external bandage there is a bandage "glue" that you just apply like an ointment. It is impervious to water and lasts about a week or so. You can find it in a pharmacy store.

No actually I was sharping a kitchen knife and the knife slipped off the sharpener and caught my other hand. So stupid and very painful, just happy there is no nerve damage.

You can get gloves locally at your restaurant supply stores or online at spa/massage supply stores.

Do not use powdered gloves.  The powder could cause a granulation of your wound and it will not heal.

We stopped using powdered gloves in operating rooms for just that reason.

I would recommend using non-latex gloves.  Many people nowadays have an allergy or sensitivity to latex.

Heal quickly, feel better soon.

The ones that just cover one finger are called Finger Cots I believe.  And I got both them and my gloves at the local pharmacy.After the stitches have been removed you might try some essential oil of lavender or vitamin E to help speed the healing when not doing massage.I do like the liquid bandage also mentioned as well, I think mine was called, New Skin or something like that. lol

Yes, definitely wear gloves!!!  Explain it to your patient/client and they will greatly accomodate.  DO NOT USE LATEX GLOVES!!!  The non-latex are more expensive, but they do not break up with the friction that we use during a normal session where as a latex glove does.  The best ones that I have found are made out of NITRILE and they company is SafeSkin, you can find them at a Medical Warehouse, I have a place that sells them but I don't know the number off hand.  I also suggest that you get the 14 inch or longer length, that way they don't roll down when you are trying to work!  Besides being a MT I have been an Emergency Medical Technician with a Latex allergy for 8 years, I have a lot of experience wearing gloves, and yes I have used gloves on my massage patients, only in such situations as above as well as if I am working on a patient in the hospital where there are potential for sores!  As for the Liquid bandage, it wonderfully wears off when oil is applied to it!!!  So use it, but definitely wear the glove over it for added protection!!!

Thanks for posting the link... I had forgotten about updating the post!I actually get them through a 3rd party, but we order from a company that is actually called "Medical Warehouse"
