hello all,

having just enrolled onto an ITEC Aromatherapy diploma at an adult education college...

I came across Martin Watt's views on his www.aromamedical.com site about aromatherapy training in the uk at further education colleges and the "badly trained part timers" being "churned out each year"

i understand that training is very much dependent on the quality and enthusiasm of the tutor - i am just wondering if anyone has knowledge or views to support or contradict his dismissal of the standards of monitoring courses/teaching/content by the DoE/ UK Gov

that said, having done my holistic massage ITEC as the same college i found the standard of teaching fine.

Reassure yourself that this is only one persons opinion and there are plenty of good teachers out there. My tutor was excellent and trained with Arnould Taylor, she know her stuff and was quite prepared to go into more depth than the ITEC syllabus. However, no therapist knows everything when they qualify and that is the same for all teaching establishments.

Martin Watt's is quite prepared to critise adult educations colleges, perhaps that is because he would prefer people to invest in his Correspondence Course which is obviously much more acceptable.

I took ITEC Aromatherapy and the course was very extensive............the study of 42 oils, which compared to VTCT (was 14 oils, not sure what it is now) and 40 case studies.

I do think the general public have no idea about Aromatherapy training and I think probably what he is referring to are the 'beauty' aromatherapists which are not qualified to blend essential oils and have to rely on ready blended oils off the shelf. In my opinion they should not be able to call themselves Aromatherapists.

I am sure you are going to thoroughly enjoy your course............the study of essential oils is absolutely fascinating. One Tip......buy 1 or 2 oils per week, carry them around, get to know them really well and what they can do before you move on to the next one. I typed out an A4 profile of each oil which helped it sink in and has been a useful tool since.

Another tip my tutor gave me (who incidentally had a degree in Holistic Medicine) was to buy a small card index box and again write a profile of each oil you are studying and also make up cards for each ailment/problem and which oils to use. I also made cards up for things like pregnancy and high blood pressure listing the oils that were suitable and which were definitely contra-indicated. Once you start practising you will find it a very useful tool for quick-reference.

Good luck and remember there are a lot of very well qualified Aromatherapists on here that would be only too happy to help!!!!!

I just wanted to thank you for the tips you put down. I am about to start my Aromatherapy course next week and I have already started with the A4 profiles. I will definitely make use of the "ailments" card system as well.

Hi. Take no notice. He is really outspoken. It's his opinion and he may well have a point, but it's only his opinion at the end of the day. You are unlikely to have him as a client (thank goodness) so don't worry about it. Some people like to spout hot air for a living and he is one of them.

thanks all - for the replies and advice for study

i'm not put off by him, i just thought that it was a rather narrow view that "part timers" would be "badly trained" at local colleges ,especially as people never stop learning.

unfortunatley i, like a lot of people, can not afford to study at private colleges nor not work whilst studying
