Idiopathic Scoliosis, Essential Oils and Raindrop therapy

I am new to everything so please bear with me if I ask the wrong questions.
My 14-year-old daughter has scoliosis - double curve each of about 40 deg. If I did not know any better, I would say by coincidence, I got some information about scoliosis essentially being bacterial or viral problem and the Raindrop treatment listed as extremely successful in treating scoliosis.
Now, I went and tried to get more info and, of course, the very next article was totally against applying undiluted essential oils as prescribed by Raindrop therapy.
Does anyone have any experiences in treating scoliosis (abnormal spine curve) with the essential oils?

Firstly I'm not sure what you mean about the phrase



Presumably you mean helping to relieve the symptoms of, such as pain and muscular tension, rather than actually straightening the spine.

Again, I'm not sure where you're posting from, but aromatherapists in the UK are trained not to use essential oils undiluted (with a few very specific exceptions), as they are extremely potent and could cause adverse reactions.

However, aromatherapy massage with a good therapist should help her gain some relief.

Someone was actually offering to straighten out my daughter's spine by applying the "raindrop technique" that uses undiluted essential oils. Since I do not know much about essential oils, I was hoping that someone here on this site might be familiar with that technique.

Hi Dana,

What are the qualifications of that person? If you think that the person is suitably qualified, then choice is yours and your daughter's. I have no personal experienc eof Raindrop therapy myself, but a friend of mine practices it.
In France and Switzerland, essential oils are often prescribed (by medical doctors or herbalists) to be taken internally. So I am not jumping against the idea of undiluted oils.

Well... I would be careful here. Raindrop Therapy is a therapy advanced by multi-level marketing people from the US, called Young Living. They advocate the use of pure essential oils, dropping them onto the spine, and where the individual feels heat and pain, it is the virus leaving the spine.

The main Aromatherapy body in the US, National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy has denounced Raindrop Therapy see http://www.naha.org/rdt_statement.htm . British Aromatherapy bodies do not teach the application of pure esential oils - the risks of sensitisation, and skin irritation are very great.

At the end of the day, science is against the pure application of such oils onto the skin, and certainly medical science does not support the ideas of Raindrop Therapy.

All I can say is, caveat emptor. You make your choice whether you wish to go with this...

I have never heard of that! My daughter had severe scoliosis - her main curve was 102 degrees, and I wished I had tried many other things for her, but many years ago I did not know about all the options, and so she had plaster jackets and braces.

Have you tried seeing a Chiropractor? Massage will help her if she has back aches, but I really don't think that it can correct a bad curve.

My daughter eventually had her curve corrected 2 years ago when she was 11 by spinal fusion T2 to pelvis. (Harrington Rods), but at 40 degrees I am sure there are other options available still to her.

I have a slight scoliosis of the spine, and as an aromatherapist, if you could treat it by dropping neat oils onto it then I would have done this ages ago! If you think about it, how can a drop of oil move a bone?

I would reccommend looking at massage and osteopathy to ease out the muscles, and to realign the spine (which is the treatment I'm undertaking) all, of course with the knowledge and advice of your doctor.

As a general rule, be wary of any therapist or company who promotes to cure anything, and anyone who tells you to use neat oils or to ingest oils.

I am not trying to support the idea, but to understand it better. To me (being a layman, I guess) it sounded logical, because the idiopathic scoliosis spine is caused by muscles pulling unevenly on the spine (again, layman talking). So, one of the theories I have been told is that muscles are pulling the spine in non symmetrical manner, because of the toxins that viruses and bacteria leave in them??? Does it make any sense to anyone? Is that where aromatherapy comes in the place - fixing the muscles?[]

The massage could help the muscles get back into place (Acupuncture and Shiatsu are other thepries you migtht want to look into). Oils should help for the infection part... except that I am not sure how recognised the bacteris/toxins theory is.
In terms of Taditional Chinese Medicine the spine is curved because the Bladder meridian is out of balance.

When I was 10 I fell from a springboard into a pool being filled with water and severely damaged my back. I ended up with severe scoliosis and spent two years in body plasters being stretched before having my spine fused - more than half its length.
I have spent the last 25 years looking at the situation I faced and studied a number of therapies.
For back damage such as scoliosis, you need something more gentle than a chiropactor, possibly osteopath, but a very good one, or rebalancing massage techniques. Go and see someone who can gently manipulate and re-energise the muscles. It needs to be done sooner than later. Mine was left almost too late, because my parents were told that there was nothing that could be done. It took a lot longer to sort out and then not completely.
If your daughter has to have the op, then it isn't the end of the world. It has never stopped me from doing 1001 things I should have thought twice about.
But first go and see a really good osteopath.
