Immortelle

Has anyone any experience of Immortelle (Helichrysum angustifolium)? The 'true' absolute oil is very difficult to get out of the bottle and apparently needs to be warmed but does repeated warming of the bottle (i.e. in a dish of hot water) destroy the qualities of the oil?

Has anyone pre-mixed it and if so does it stay stable?

Hi

Helichrysum is a fantastic oil (especially for healing) and although I have never used the absolute (only the distilled essential oil) I can give you the following information on how to handle absolutes:

Absolutes of a solid or semi-solid consistency are best heated first to make them pliable. A small portion is then taken and worked up into a suitable fluid by the addition of either an alcohol or vegetable oil. You only need a very small amount of an absolute (often only 1 drop per 50mls of vegetable oil) as they are very very concentrated. Once in the vegetable oil they will stay stable for some time. It really doesn't matter if they are heated several times.

Ps you really ought to try the distilled oil, its wonderful and has a very different aroma. I have just been fortunate to visit the Drome area in France for my annual holiday and bought some lovely organic Helichrysum from a small distillery, I also purchased some Organic Lavender Fine straight from distillation (I watched the whole process) wonderful!!!

I purchased the oil for use with a new MS patient........I will certainly follow your advise about heating it. I also got some Oakmoss today which I think I may have the same problems with...........smells gorgeous though.

I love the sound of your trip to France, it must be fantastic to see the whole process. If you have a minute could you send me some details of the area etc?

I am interested in your use of the this oil for MS, please tell me more.

As to my holiday well, where to begin? The drome area of France is split into different regions the Vallee De La Drome Diois, Drome Provencale and Haute Provence being the areas where most of the aromatherapy plants I know and love are grown. It is a diverse and beautiful place where the people are friendly the markets fantastic and where most of the production of lavandin and lavender takes place. As I have said in the other posting I always come across something different (several years ago I was fortunate enough so see some organic mellisa being cut and distilled). I really do feel at home in this area and could stay there for ever (must gem up on my French though). I am thinking about setting up aromatherapy tours in this area either for my students or in general but this is a new thought and I haven't thought whether people would be interested (just because I am doesn't mean everyone would be) and the costs and logistics of it all, but I am seriously thinking about it.

The area is worth a visit just for a relaxing holiday the plants and essential oils just add the icing to the cake!! (for me anyway)

It is brilliant for bruising Yasmin.

I usually warm my thicker oils in some warm (but not hot) water but I have also found that holding them in my hand works. Failing that stick em down your bra!

Your holidays sounds absolutely fantastic and I love your idea about organising trips........you can put me down on the list straightaway. I absolutely adore the French countryside, especially the Alps and have often thought about selling up and moving there, perhaps opening a retreat or healing centre. My family came from Normandy originally.

As regards Immortelle and MS, I can't tell you anything specific as I haven't starting treating her yet. I do know that it is also good for lupus, breast cancer, muscular dystrophy and cerebal palsy. It stimulates production of new cells, lifts depression, nervous exhaustion and helps with stress. It is also believed to help with muscle pain and is an allergen. I have read that it is useful for drug detox i.e. giving up smoking or other drugs.

Caroline - hope you are keeping well. I loved your comment about sticking it down my bra but I am afraid there is very little room left in it (smile)!!!! I usually just warm them in my hand but perhaps my boobs would be a hotter alternative...........I shall have to get myself a bigger bra!!!!

I have tried hotter and hotter water to 'melt' the Immortelle and have now resorted to sticking it in a bowl of boiling water...........if that doesn't do the trick, nothing will!!!

Well this stuff lives up to it's name...........CONCRETE!!!!! It is like the hardest stickiest treacle you have ever come across. Even the heat from my boobs wouldn't melt that...........lol.

On the subject of big boobs............I would absolutely love a reduction. Maybe one day when I can afford it

I have the same problem with benzoin oil. I solved it by taking the droper insert out... Now I can poor it out without waiting ages. Still poors slowly becuase it is so thick.

There is no way to get Immortelle to pour anyway...........it is completely solid. My bottle didn't even come with a pipette, it came with a plastic circle over it.

Had a re-think and asked around and came up with this solution. Try taking the cap off the bottle and stand the bottle in a heat proof bowl and gradually add very hot water to the neck of the bottle. This should (I hope) soften the concrete sufficiently to a thick pouring consistency. Failing this I would contact your supplier and ask them how best to use it. Absolutes of this nature are notoriously difficult to use and usually only used for perfumerypurposes.
