Hi,

I have a new client that is about to start a course in IVF. She has requested aromatherapy massage as a way
of relaxing her before and during treatment. I have only recently qualified as an aromatherapist and know there
are quite a few essential oils that must be avoided during pregnancy. Can anyone advise me whether it is safe
for me to treat this client with essential oils before her IVF treatment, is it just after embryo replacement theseoils
should be avoided?

Any advice gratefully received.

on the course I did for aromatherapy in pregnancy etc we were advised to avoid oils that are emenagogues ( basil, carrot seed, both chamomiles, fennel,marjorum, melissa, myrrh, both roses and rosemary)

also avoid clary sage, cypress jasmine,

juniper is an abortifacient

if your client is going through IVF you will probably be looking to treat the side effects such as mood swings and bloating - geranium and a drop of ylang ylang (tonic for the womb) and a citrus oil would make a nice blend and is the route I would take although I have not yet treated anyone on IVF

I hope this helps and hope you will get some more replies as it is interesting to see what other oils people suggest

Hi

I would probably focus on the emotional side of IVF when treating her - ie working with stress relieving/balancing oils. Work at 1% and avoid abdominal massage. This is the approach I would take for any woman telling me she is trying to conceive - either naturally or with IVF. I agree with the "avoid" list given by hemelgirl.
