Making products

Hiya everyone,

I haven't posted for ages as I have been so busy. I am now making my own products after attending aromantics courses, which I have to say are excellent. I am getting really concerned about the laws and regulations and having trouble getting information. Have been on the net and here for around 2 hours now. Anyone know where I can get a list of INCI names for ingredients. Also, having read Therapist magazine, apparently, there are new regs on naming certain essential oils. I went to the website but was unable to find exactly what I needed to know. I'm probably not taking the time to look properly but the information is mind boggling. I just want to play and make my products but am now getting worried that I might be breaking the law. I thought this might be an interesting thread and we could maybe help each other out, hopefully, saving some time and energy.

Hi there,this is exactly the problem i had .It appears i can only make blends for a client who has had a consultation with me.By law if you are makig products in your own clinic they do not (obviously)come under scrutinisation of any testing by the health people (the name escapes me but they look in kitchens too!).This means there could be loads of bacteria flying around and we would not have a clue.
As you have been on an aromantics course,you are covered to make products for public other than your clients as long as you use all products via aromantics as eachingredient has passed the test. I do have somelinks for cosmetic ingredient listings etc buried deep in saved messages if you want i will dig them out.
Am i correct in what ive been saying or in my pregnant state have i made it all up? !!

Thanks for that janec, It's a minefield isn't it? The labelling thing too. I thought I was being really good with this but now discover the INCI name has to go on my tiny jars (or tags) as well as the well-known name! I don't know if you are right or not but I think I will soon find out - have sent off my certificates to my insurer and I will let you know the outcome. I would be grateful for anything you have which might be of help.

I've been a bit confused by all this too and have done a bit of advice asking. As I understand it, anything you make with the intent to sell, has to be tested by a professional first, which can cost anything form £75 upwards for each product. Even selling on essential oil blends to the public, even if you are an aromatherapist. If you are selling to a client it comes under the medicine regulations (or something like that) but if selling onto the public, it comes under the cosmetic regulations (which say's each one has to be tested). It's a real pain, cause I wanted to go down this route too and even bought in lots of stuff to make my own products but now don't know what to do. I'm sure there are plenty of people who don;t know or choose to ignore the regulations - I don't know.

As for INCi names etc. Did you get the education books with Aromantics? They have the names in the education pack 2 (green book). there's also a site called justasoap. In the left menu there at the bottom there is some guidelines and names. Another source is Base Formula who have INCA names etc. I'm sure they also have info on the oils that have sensitisation properties that also have to be stated on the product list etc, like geraniol etc that may be what it means by naming certain essential oils.

Hope this is of some help, although probably not the advice or help we want to hear.

thanks for that. I found the INCI names in my Aromantic packs (duh!) Someone always thinks of a way to spoil things don't they? Your info is really useful though. Thanks again.
