Massage in Japan

Does anyone have any experience w/massage therapy as practiced in Japan? I have a couple new clients from Japan who get very frequent massage when at home. They are pleased w/my work, but I'm curious if anyone knows something about standard practice they may have encountered before. (I would ask, but there is quite a language issue, plus I don't want anyone to have to talk about previous massages while having one! )

They live here now. No interpreter, we just muddle along. They are working here too, so they do have enough good English to do everyday things. But having a massage and talking about your athletic and injury history just somehow don't get covered in most survivor-level language courses...

Things are going well so far -- rebooks, progress.

I did have this interesting idea. I pretty much did just straight massage the first time or two. I wanted to add in my SRT stuff, but because it involves a lot of instruction from me and lots of feedback from the client, I wasn't sure I could make everything understood. I hit on the idea of practicing on my husband, giving him all the directions in Spanish (which he doesn't speak). I figured if I could make one person understand a language foreign to them, I could do it with another. It worked pretty well, now I just have to work up the nerve to do it with a paying client.

Have you considered contacting someone from your local high school or community college to see if they know of anyone who speaks Japanese?
You might offer them a free half hour massage in return for some translation... or if these clients are going to be regular... maybe you should look into taking lessons. :
I have a couple friends online who speak Japanese. (One was even an exchange student there for awhile.) If you have a few directions... or yes or no questions you want me to try to run past them, I'd be happy to give it a try for you.

Oh, I have! I already have a couple classes under my belt -- I took them when I lived in Mexico City so it was quite a few years back, but I seem to be remembering what I got. (That was an experience -- being taught a 3rd language in your second language -- you really just have to give in and float!)

I'd love to PM you though -- I could use some situational basics (thanks for the offer). Needless to say, massage therapy was not covered in "Introduccion a Japones"!
