oils for chest infection in brand new mum

Hi there
My daughter had her baby last Friday morning following a marathon labour of 56 hours. During the labour she went down with a chest infection poor thing so she is really struggling at the moment and not able to get any rest/sleep in the rare moments that Noah isn't wanting to be fed as she is coughing so much.
I want to send her a blend but if I send something to rub on her chest, then he will be next to it when feeding and if I send something to go in a vapouriser he is in the room with her and getting it that way too. I hope that makes sense!
I am newly qualified so don't have the experience that I know a lot of you have, so please can anyone suggest anything?

Perhaps she could use an old fashioned method of putting her head over steaming water, with the relevant oils in it, keeping a towel over her head to get maximum effect - she could do this when he is sleeping or being cuddled by someone else.

I would NOT put oils on her chest if she is breast feeding.

Hi Melanie, on congratulations Granny!
I would agree with Jabba, for a chest infection that would be a good way of ingesting the oils anyway. What oils were you planning on using, bearing in mind she is breast feeding? I have found Benzoin to be the best for chest infections, and I have been using it on my children since they were toddlers, so it's a very safe oil....

Thanks both of you for your replies.
I was thinking of Benzoin and Elemi as she had both during her pregnancy when she had bronchitis and it helped. I wondered about something antibacterial/viral too. Love Melanie x

lavender is safe and reasonably strongly antibacterial. All the strong ones like thyme and tea tree would not be a good idea when breastfeeding. A gentle steam-tent would be great - i often use Olbas oil tempered with some sandalwood oil, which is soothing to the mucous membrane in the nose and throat - olbas and eucalyptus on their own can be a bit harsh.
