REDONDO BEACH, Calif. — Steven Chance Brinkerhoff has been charged with a first-degree felony in the Jan. 4, 2024 murder of a Midvale massage parlor employee.
Court documents stated that detectives collected DNA samples from the scene where Yuping Jiao was found dead in a pool of blood. When the detectives entered the sample into the National DNA Index System, it was matched to Brinkerhoff.
Additionally, surveillance footage was collected from a business near A+ Massage on 7444 South State Street in Salt Lake City. It showed a man in a wheelchair arriving and departing the parlor.
Following the murder, charging documents said that Brinkerhoff fled to California. On Jan. 19, he was arrested outside of a California massage parlor. He is currently in California law enforcement custody.
According to charging documents, Brinkerhoff has “an extensive criminal history.” Additionally, he was on probation in California at the time of his arrest.

On Jan. 4, 2024, the victim’s brother went to the A+ Massage Parlor to check on her. According to charging documents, she was found with “approximately 56 stab wounds.”
Brinkerhoff’s phone records revealed that he and the victim had made prior contact via text message. Although the contents of the phone records were not revealed in the document, it said that cellphone data also placed the defendant at the scene on the day of the murder.
On the surveillance footage, Brinkerhoff was seen arriving at 12:30 p.m. He left just shy of two hours later, at 2:25 p.m., according to charging documents.
