This apparently is a true story: I read it yesterday.

Apparently there was a meeting between the Macmillans and the de Gaulles; both couples being super refined conversation didn't exactly flow.

So Mrs Macmillan leaned over to Mme de Gaulle and said 'If you could have anything in the world, what would you choose?'

and Mme de Gaulle answered 'A penis'.

Stricken gasps all around, until General de Gaulle hastened to correct his wife's dreadful accent: 'Appiness,'appiness - she want 'appiness' he cried!

There used to be one about Winston Churchill, who said in French, in a speech:

"Quand je regard mon derrière, je vois qu'il est divisé en deux partis."

He was trying to say "When I look back at my past, I see that my life is divided into two halves".

Good old Winnie!

I always love the one about him being able to shoot back (despite the alcohol - or perhaps because of it?), when a woman accused him of being very drunk "Yes Madam and you are very ugly, but I will be sober in the morning!"
