In a joint effort Thursday night, the Town of Markham and York Regional Police raided seven massage parlours and laid at total of 32 bylaw violation charges at five locations.
Const. Steven Morrell said police were supporting the town's bylaw enforcement officers, but also looking for criminal elements at the body rubs. No criminal charges were laid, he said.
The charges include violations concerning customer and attendant nudity, locked doors, interior doors with no windows and operating without a licence.
Changes were laid at the Centre Studio and Comfort Spa, both on Hwy. 7, Amazing Health on Denison Street, the Markham Health Studio on Woodbine Avenue and Complementary Health Care on Corby Crescent.
Citizen complaints led to Thursday's raids and both police and town officers will continue to investigate complaints, said town spokesperson Marjorie Rebane.
Corporations can be fined up to $50,000 and could face a closure order, said town clerk Sheila Birrell.
