Practising aromatherapy while pregnant

Hi,

Given that there are contraindications for some essential oils when pregnant, I was wondering how aromatherapists cope with this? Do you stop using essential oils completely when pregnant, or just avoid the contraindicated oils?

youy actually dont need hundreds of oils in your box to practice aromatherapy however as they are the tools of our trade we just keep getting em dont we!!!!!! I actually became quite ingenius with my oils and used ones for pain(for instance) that i wouldnt ordinarily have used.This was basically because i wanted to save oils for my own delivery and wanted them to have maximum effect ie clary sage,rose...........Please being pregnant is a wild enough time without worrying i would research the oils you are happy to use and be creative with your blending!Dont not use them you are missing out on them yourself then!

I'm planning to start studying part-time for a diploma in aromatherapy next year, and I'm also hoping to start a family some time soon. I don't want to have to put one off while waiting for the other and vice versa! (Although I may want to take a break in my studies during the latter stages of pregnancy and when I'm a very new mum, and luckily the college I'm favouring allows this.) I'll ask the college about studying the course while pregnant when they re-open next year, but thanks for putting my mind at rest in the meantime

I didn't have to worry about it, but you are right to.

I agree with Janec. I hadn't thought about it from the point of view about using oils during your own birth.

The beauty of the oils though, as she says, is that they are so versatile. You can use so many different ones and it isn't often that a client would demand a certain oil and if you were pregnant they would understand anyway.

What you might find though is that you are more sensitive to them and you have to consider things from a nausea point of view! Also doing massages whilst pregnant could be very hard work!

Do you have to do it now? Could you wait. Do you do reflexology? Might be better to do that if not. It is popular too and worth doing.

I'd thought about the massage side of things, but not about the sensitivity and nausea issues you mention. You may well have a point there.

I feel I don't want to wait - I've already put it off for over 2 years I'm also finding that as I think of starting a family I feel even more of an urge to get my work life matching my true passions and motivations. As I mentioned, the course I'm considering would allow me to take a break while studying as long as I finish the course within 3 years of starting it, so I could stop studying completely while pregnant (if I want to) and then take it up again later on. That might well be the best way to go.

I definitely like the idea of using oils during the birth though. This is a whole new area for me to explore!

Understand about the gettingtired during massage........boy you get tired now!I made sure i had a portable high stool chair thingey(!) and so i stood for the back as this is often where you need the pressure and to stand correctly,but i could sit for the feet and head and at times if i needed to and it wasnt a specific place that needed focus i would sit for the legs and arms for periods.Actually where is that stool?if i add wheels to the bottom i wouldnt need to get off it all day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
