I have a client coming to me for massage to loosen her pectoral muscles for a planned breast augmentation. Her doctor recommended loosening and suppling the tissue in the chest region as they are going to put the implants under the pectoral muscles. When speaking with my client, I mentioned that a lot more than just the pecs should be worked on to open up the entire chest, ribcage, and shoulder girdle. After all, it's all connected . Does anyone have any experience in pre or post op work for breast augmentation? Any suggestions? BTW, the client is a body builder and a nutritionist and in great shape. She has stopped doing chest workouts recently following her doctor's suggestion, but still works out regularly. Any advice or experience would be much appreciated! Thanks!!

Am I crazy, or does it sound "wrong" that the augmentation will be UNDER the pecs?? Every time the pec contracts, it will be squishing (sorry to use such a technical term...LOL) the augmentation material (some kind of gel, I assume), no?

Keep in mind that these questions come from a person with no experience/knowledge of augmentation procedures beyond pop-culture info. Somebody can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong with my understanding, but I thought they always inserted the "gel thingy" over top of the muscle, beneath a few layers of skin...?

I can't add anything re the massage, but as for the surgery - depending on the patient, their body type, the size of the implants, and the type of look they're going for, implants can be placed above or below the muscle. I'll watch darn near any surgical type procedure I come across on tv, and though I don't make a habit of it, I'm guilty of watching some segments of plastic surgery shows when they're getting into describing the surgery. If I recall correctly, placing them under the pecs tends to give a more natural look, as opposed to the ones that scream LOOK AT MY BOOB JOB! :shocked:

Thanks for responding. I'm still looking for info regarding technique, etc. I will let you all know how things go. We have a few sessions lined up, so I'll go with techniques I know for loosening up the fascia and muscles. I imagine the techniques I have learned through CORE Institute training and others will be valuable as I haven't encountered anything like this before. I will plan to do some fascial stretching and open up along the lateral body first and then work toward the anterior and posterior torso and chest. If anyone has any advice as to methods or madness :altwink: , I'd love to hear all!

Teach the client to stretch her pecs, both major and minor. If you don't know how, send her to someone who does. You can do all the stripping, MFR, etc. to speed things along, but she really needs to do daily stretching on her own time, preferably several times per day. My strongest recommendations would be Active Isolated Stretching and/or Muscle Energy Technique (MET) aka Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF).

I've had experience with clients who have had implants, but never been asked to perform "pre-op" work. I think that is very interesting.
