Reflexology - Professional accreditation & bodies

Hi everyone

I'm about to develop my skills into reflexology, and would like some advice & pointers re accreditation bodies & training.

There seems to be a number of training providers, and a number of bodies from city & guilds, through to AOR & IIR.

What are the views of those of you already qualified as to which path to follow, considering future regulation issues, as to which organisation in the UK is the primary and/or respected awarding body?

I'm afraid I dont have any answer! In fact, I have the same questions as, the more I read about reflexology, the more interested I get! So I though I would bump this thread!

Best thing to do is check if you can get insurance to practice after the course as some courses are not covered by insurance and so are a wate of money. The AOR will advise you, I personally did an ITEC course, available at most colleges. The DOH are only going to endorse certain training so I would look it up on their web site and contact them for advice, probably others on here can give you more info on this.

I'm in the same boat as you guys as well. I was advised by someone to call my local reflexology clinics and see what qualifications they have under their belt and from which accredited bodies. They're a little funny here in west yorkshire about giving out advice and info, but one of you guys may get more joy out of the reflexologists in your area.

To answer this question is very simple. If a course allows you to join organisations that are members of the Reflexology Forum www.reflexologyforum.org such as FHT, AoR, CThA, BRA and others then you will be OK. I don't know what the DoH has to do with it.

This means that ABC level 3 (AoR training schools) and ITEC level 3 are generally good quals (I believe ITEC is being upgraded, ie 60 case studies instead of 40). VTCT can be a bit low level unless you do their advanced techniques course on top (why there is two courses I don't know, probably a way of screwing more money). Don't know about C&G or APNT. BSR, IIR and BRA seem to be OK.

At the end of the day, voluntary self-regulation or not, you can practice as a reflexologist. The law isn't suddenly going to change. The powers-that-be doesn't give a toss about reflexology. The NHS isn't suddenly going to open the doors and employ 100s of reflexologists. So just get out there and do it and contribute to a better world. You don't need permission!

I spent weeks researching which qualification to take . I did a IFR ( international Federation of Reflexologists) course at the British School of Reflexology, I did almost 150 case study hours in total although we were expected to do a minimum of 84. Its the best way to learn plenty of hands on with the benefit of in depth study, better prepares you for when you are ready to practice on your own. I have heard of people doing less in depth training and didnt have the confidence to practice once qualifed, which seems such a waste of time and money. Try to make sure you also do a seperate A&P exam, which is a must if you plan to so further studies. Good Luck!
