Registration for the fall class at the Therapeutic Massage & Training Center (TMTC) in Westfield is in its final days. Orientation for both the day and evening class is Sept. 8. Spots remain open.
TMTC teaches deep tissue massage therapy, including medical massage, as well as introduction to several varied modalities, such as Thai massage, Lymphatic massage, foot reflexology and Myofascial release therapy.
The class curriculum also includes other hard skills, such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, neuromuscular technique, CPR/AED and First Aid, as well as soft skills, including ethics, business law and marketing so graduates are prepared to enter the workforce or even start their own business.
TMTC keeps classes small, no more than 16 students, with a second teacher brought in when class size reaches 10 or more. In addition, as New Jersey law requires that therapeutic massage training students experience 100 hours of hands-on training, TMTC holds students clinics that allow students to practice on people experiencing real issues. This differs from most massage training schools, which have students attain their 100 hands-on hours by practicing on teachers and one another.
The course runs approximately 10 months. The day class meets Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The evening class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., as well as one weekend per month, Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Tuition is $7,900, plus an application, registration and books fee of $390. Students graduate with a Massage Training Certification recognized by the State of New Jersey and may apply to the state for licensing, which is required to practice massage therapy in New Jersey. Payment plans are available. TMTC also offers job placement assistance for all graduates.
"Therapeutic massage offers wonderful opportunities to our students, from a whole new career for those seeking career change, to a side job for those looking for additional income, to career supplementation for those already in the health care sector," said Arlene Reardon, TMTC owner.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics states, "Employment of massage therapists is projected to grow 22 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. Continued growth in the demand for massage services will lead to new openings for massage therapists."

It is a member of the Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals and the American Massage Therapy Association.
