Their comments are a little testy but seem within the realm of acceptable discourse.

Do we really need this heavy handed of a moderation?

Heavy handed moderation leads to less participation, less spirited and open exchange of information.

Less information leads to boring moribund board.

Everyone is an adult here, talking about adult stuff. How much hall monitoring is necessary?

Thanks flinde, you are correct. Long story short Mokoa has a bone to pick with me because of previous disagreements over what I decide to post or not post in public. He then became a moderator and wants kick me off the site. This is the websites version of free speech, which is suppose to be the reason this website exists. Hmmmmmm Wilbur was part of the disagreement and continues to make snide comments toward me. Now you know why he is heavy handed. You are right about participation.

IMHO, flinde, wayneb, and wilber...I think the point is that calling each other names (which is rather childish) is described quite accurately by what the moderator wrote in blue, ie. uncalled for and not germane.

I guess I disagree with flinde that insulting each other is "within the realm of acceptable discourse". (Yes, calling someone a "loser" actually IS an insult.) I think you can give opposing opinions about things without hurling insults. "Free speech" on a website does not mean respect goes out the window. IMHO, anyway.

yes, Footlong. That's what I am trying to say. Lively discourse sometimes contain language such as the above.

"get a life" "what a loser" might not be the most mature discourse in the world, but I think its a stretch to call it "warning" or "actionable" rule breaking. These are widely used online terms.

I dont come here to see nice etiquette or to see Roberts Rules in practice. I come here to see lively discourse, information shared.

Soon as people are afraid to post such stuff as "get a life", the sooner there is a chilling effect on posting.

"you are a m***** F*****", "your mother is (fill in the blank)", this is name calling and unacceptable.

"moderating" "get a life" verbiage? Ridiculous! And a slippery slope for a board that seems to have done quite well for more than a year without such heavy handed moderating.

Come on guys..give the dude a break. Nobody got banned, and no points were issued. Just a general warning to keep the thread on track. I don't see that as being heavy-handed moderation, guys....and TRUST ME......I can't stand when I see examples of that.

In this situation, it's more than reasonable to think the small conflict could have escalated to a point where a stronger action was necessary. A gentle nudge was the answer.

I'm glad to see all of you care. Don't worry...we do too.

You concept of "acceptable discourse" differs from the concept of "acceptable discourse" as put forth by the rules of this site. You may want to fix that.

Mokoa, thanks for the advice, but I like my "concept of acceptable behavior" the way it is and have no intentions of "fixing" anything.

Further, even if "get a life" does require a "warning", that "warning" does not necessarily have to be PUBLIC, ALL CAPS IN BLUE. The stock in the town square for cursing has been out of fashion for about 400 years.

See, aside from you suggesting that I modify my perception of what I perceive to be acceptable discourse, you and I are not so far apart on this issue. You sir, moderate my comments and comments only, not my perception of acceptable behavior.
