A state agency shuts down a string of ten Houston massage parlors, courtesy of a year-old state law.
House Bill 3579 empowers the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to issue an emergency closure order for six months. In question in this case...ten massage parlors suspected of human trafficking.
The agency's Tela Mange says this is the eighth time they've issued such an order and the second time "where the owner of the establishment says I don't want to go through with a six-months closure, I will go ahead and sign an agreed order that I will get out of the massage industry in Texas."
Mange says in this case, trafficking is a euphemism for forced prostitution and any legitimate massage establishment owner doesn't want their business referred to as a parlor.
