BRB generally means to me no more than a few minutes. Lets say anywhere up to five minutes. If they're not back within that time, then leave a message that you are going to sign off and you'll talk with them later. Any time I've used BRB, it usually means I have to go pee and I really will BRB.
Maybe the person you're chatting with has other issues you're not aware of, like kids need to be taken care of, or oops the spouse just came home. In which case CUL8TR would be better.
