When to not massage!

ok... I have never been really concerned about catching things from clients but I suppose I am getting older and less immune.

I wrote to the lady in charge where I do massage in a company every day. Empployees will come in sick somewhat often.

I just missed about 2 days of work (non-paid) and can't be having this happen.

How would you briefly state to all employee's when they shouldn't come for massage.... taking in consideration that I really and tired of getting sick! LOL I need to find the right wording and it will be emailed to everyone. I say brief because these folks are at work and won't have time to read anything extensive.

I flat-out tell my clients "If you are sick, and you show up, especially with a fever or something coneforum.xxxious, you are out of here until you are healthy." That goes for illnesses, rashes, poison ivy/oak/sumack, etc. It is disrespectful of my professional need to make a living, and totally disrespectful of any and all other clients who depend on me being available to help them with their issues.

Have sent about 8 people home w/ fevers since I started working in the profession. One fellow was nearly hallucinating from the high fever [100.4!] that he had when he came in. For him, I didn't let him drive home, called the wife to come get his sorry sick self, and gave him an alcohol bath till she got there to keep his fever in check. When they are sick, it can make them more sick to have their scheduled bodywork. It's not worth it for you, and not worth it for them either.

When can't I receive massage?

Please re-schedule your session if you are running a fever, if you have been prescribed an antibiotic for a coneforum.xxxious disease (i.e. strep. throat, tonsillitis, bronchitis, etc.) until you have been on the medication for at least 24 hours, or if you have had vomiting or diarrhea in the past 24 hours.

Also, consider re-scheduling if you have a severe cold or throat/nasal symptoms.

We do not wish to deprive any other clients of their needed care, due to what could have been an avoidable illness on our part.

You know, I'd love to see a sticky go up in the Client & Hobbiest Section regarding sickness and massage appointments. Get the word out, I say!

Why Cancel When You're Ill
If you have a fever or an infectious sickness, even a common cold, that is good reason to postpone your massage appointment. For one thing, touch may not feel good. For another thing, you may be coneforum.xxxious, especially in the first seforum.xxxes of a cold or flu. This is usually when you are feeling the worst, when you are coughing and sneezing frequently. The more you limit your contact with others, including your massage therapist, the less you will spread it around. For example, if you don't "pass" a cold on to your massage therapist, he or she won't spread it to all the other clients.

Studies show that you can transmit a cold or flu to others one or two days before your symptoms appear, and up to five days after first being exposed to the virus. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), colds are most coneforum.xxxious two to four days after original exposure, when there is plenty of the virus present in the nasal secretions.

There is another reason to avoid massage when you have a cold or flu. Because one of the major impacts of massage is on the circulation (including the removal of wasteful by-products and infectious materials), it is thought that massage can actually increase the spread of infection in your body. If you are sick, your immune system is already working hard. One of the best immune supports may truly be resting and drinking plenty of liquids.

And, remember, whenever you have any questions about the appropriateness of massage, be sure to talk with a massage therapist when you scedule the appointment. And, if you are under the care of a a physician for any reason, let them know you are receiving massage therapy.

I'm sure that they've copywritten this passage, so you probably wouldn't want to use it verbatim, but it should give you an idea of what information you can pass on to your clients and co-workers.
