Why doesn't Ron Paul chit or get off the pot and become a Libertarian already?

This goes for his followers as well. People don't vote for him because they don't trust Republicans (well that and his shrill cracking weaselly demeanor).

Simply because it is a two party dominated system and third parties can't get very far. He ran as a LP candidate in 1988. Also, his beliefs are considered paleo-conservative which is really just the traditional conservative positions, though things have changed lately.

Believe me, the Republicans will gain seats at the midterm elections since this change and hope and stimulus crap is going nowhere and the people are starting to wake up more and more.

Whether he runs again or not, he is waking many people up to our corrupt government run by republicrat power mongers.

Because the Libertarian party is utterly irrelevant?

He can do more good as a Republican, I think, and it is vital for the health of American politics that there are at least two reasonable options in an election. At present, I think the Republican Party is in danger of destroying itself.

Not that I support Ron Paul anyway, personally, but I am inclined to agree with him on this issue.

I prefer to look at it this way.
In recent years, the GOP has tried to claim it is the "big tent" party - with strict constitutional constructionists, conservative Christians, libertarians, militaristic expansionists, etc., etc. Ron Paul represents the libertarian section of the party.

I consider him to be like a canary in a coal mine. If he leaves the party, the last semi-rational bit of it will be gone. In today's political climate, it would then be dead within a single election cycle.
