I was sitting right next to this hot guy and his date at the mall, and I was lonely so I started a conversation with him, and I think the girlfriend got mad but I just wanted to talk to somebody to not be lonely, I wasn't trying to flirt with him.

well unless i was also friends with his girlfriend AND talking to her too, then i do not think it's rude
but if you were just talking to the boy & not her, then yeah i'd find that rude in the girlfriends perspective

Regardless of whether its a date or an outing with friends, its always awkward to interrupt a person when they are out there with someone else

You should look for someone who was alone, its better that way. You will not be interrupting them, well, at least not that much

What you did was interrupting other people's outing, and that's not a very nice thing to do.
