Find it funny to see the yapping, as if every guy in Alberta only votes conservative. I voted Liberal my entire adult life through till 2015, inclusive. However the total mismanagement of every aspect of Canada, the porosity to money launderers and stolen funds, complete disaster on the immigration front (Canada is parasitically fooling immigrants to bring their previously earned savings and spend it in Canada, and then they realize after 3 to 5 years that there is NO job creation, no new industries, no investments into Canada.). And the sheer waste by the greatest collection of incompetence over past 9 years.. Canada is in decline. If anyone denies that.. they are liars. Mind you, the same people will wax poetic about living in Europe. Sadly most of Europe including countries like Portugal, Italy are in various stages of decline. Food is good, the one concession. But economically it’s a disaster, even Germany. Europe is ok for retiring North Americans who don’t need money, but that’s about it. Canada is on the same path of decay.

Wait, what, you blame Trudeau for the ills of Canada and then note how these issues are worldwide? What?

I happen to now live in Portugal, and the cost of living is a huge issue here, but almost completely due to housing prices increasing thanks to people seeking affordable housing from other places as well as wealthy non-residents buying up property, and lastly thanks to tourism and the conversion of many apartments to short term rentals.

One mistake a lot of people make when comparing North America vs many European nations is that they try to determine an apples:apples cost of living. They look at the cost of a SFD type of home, a new car, etc. Wages are lower on the eastern side of the Atlantic, but it's also possible to live much cheaper and not really make many sacrifices. We don't own a car here as even the small (40K pop) city we live in has amazing transit ($30CDN a month for a bus pass that covers a large geographic area) and trains connecting to other places and major cities. Our rent is a little higher than average but it's because we live in a pretty desirable area right on the ocean, but still cheap compared to most of Canada and within reach of a lot of people here. Our neighbours aren't rich folks, just average or a bit more in terms of earnings.

Portuguese people are just like everyone else in the world, they love to complain, but the nation also has less than 18% of the workers earning less than a living wage. Canada is pushing 30%.

As rail strike by Comboios de Portugal strands commuters, and most of the real hard work is done by folks from Brazil (and from some other nations) while they get sneered at as second class citizens. Yep, Canada is surely on its way following closely down the path to join the fine living standards of its European counterparts with their high minded thinking and failing economies. However, do respect Norway having built up its sovereign funds from decades of petroleum revenues… at least they have some flexibility as they navigate the future.

Agreed, Norway has looked after the resource wealth and citizens enjoy a very strong economy with little to no tax.
Alberta's heritage fund was initially set-up for future generations but it has continually been raped by different Governments because of poor economic planning.

Also Alberta’s Heritage Fund was built from tax revenues after funds were transferred to other provinces. That would be like Norway transferring funds to other members of the EEA before it could add funds to its own GPFG. Currently valued at $1.738 Trillion or $325K per citizen. That’s USD.
It’s not that equalization payments are wrong within a united country. What is wrong is when you consistently kick the goose that lays the golden eggs and then try to choke it.

Lower and middle class pay more taxes in Norway than in Canada or the USA, so not sure what you mean there...
