Avoiding the "Undesirable" Callers?

OK so a friend of mine who is a major international Marketing guy, was asking me if I had anything on my website that would give those would be undesirerable callers (I think you all know what I mean...) a way of knowing that I am a PROFESSIONAL and do not accept anything else. I thought my website was rather pro. and that I had done enough to give the best impression but maybe I am not cause I still continually get these nasty calls!! Anyway, he suggested that I put something at the bottom of each page that in a very nice and professional way that I do not tolerate this type of call. Well, I was wondering what might be a good way of putting it. He also suggested that I put something to the affect of "If you are looking for *** please click here" But when they clicked on teh link it would just take them to google or some other search site!! I thought about this and I am just not so sure. Should I just deal with them and leave it alone? Maybe it would help if you looked at my website. My eyes went right to these 2 things without even looking at the rest of your page. This may be some of why you are getting too many "other requests"? I don't know. But, I am just letting you know that was the first thing I noticed when trying to look at it from the eyes of someone "looking for more".

Maybe just a little strategic re-wording will do the trick for you.

I know that we have a number of people who are willing to help with this sort of thing.... maybe post the site with requests on the Website Ideas, Software & Technical Information board, if you are interested in making changes?

I don't like the idea of you putting a link like that either. I'm sure that we could help work on your wording if you feel you want to change something. However I think guys are going to infer what they Want to infer from things that might otherwise be very innocent.

I've looked at your website and thought it was quite nice. I don't think there's anything in particular that is giving guys the wrong impression about your business. Over all I thought your website was just a touch busy... and slightly feminine. Not that that is a bad thing... because one would think that feminine look would deter guys looking for the something other than legit massage.

I like the picture of you with your family. I feel THAT would be a good thing to have on the first page... with a caption... "Massage for the Whole Family." To me the idea of you having something to offer to "everybody" is still gotten across.

Also there was a line in one of your testimonials that I thought might be better to edit it out. It's by Paul... and I felt the comment about your hands might just be a bit... I don't know... TMI? I felt it might be a factor in giving guys the wrong impression... I'd edit it out and if you keep Paul's comment I'd move it so that the two from male clients are not together... so that they would have to scroll down the page to find another comment from a male client.

However, all in all, I really think it has less to do with your website, and more to do with the mindset of the guy who is calling... if they want to read something into what you say on your website... they will. Regardless of disclaimers or links to professional organizations, IMHO.

I agree with the above posts. I would not put a link button like that on your site.

However, there is nothing wrong with having a clear statement about the type of work you provide, also making it clear what you do not provide - particularly if you are getting calls of that nature from your web site.

Be careful though. Do not use text that has any words in it that are of the type these guys are looking for. Because the search engines will pick it up, and will deliver you more of those types of visitors.

So either be very careful about what words you use, or better yet, use the words you need to and turn the statement into a gif or jpg image (a picture). That way it can be read, but the search engines will not be able to read it. You should be able to do that in Photoshop or another similar program.

I agree with what the others have said. Don't do that link!

Here is a sample of my FAQ section from my site. This is the wording that I use (got the idea from someone on the board):

Professionalism:

I am a professional massage therapist. Comments or actions of a sexual nature will not be tolerated.

I reserve the right to refuse services to anyone who is intoxicated, suffering from a coneforum.xxxious illness or for any other reason that I feel is necessary.

Also, like Galen has written, I have carefully chosen the way I word things. It is nice to be cleaver and say things like "let my hands do their magic on you", but who knows what image or idea that brings into the wrong persons mind.

I have one testimonial that has a client mentioning "magic fingers" - but since it was written by a female and the rest of the post is clear/medical - I have left it alone.

I like the family picture too.

These are all very good pointers and I was think the same thing when he said this, I was brought back to a previous post by another member about how they had a link to a "sex site" and I got red flags myself!! I gues I just needed a bit of reassurance!! Thanks TG for that point, I will cahnge that wording! Also Masthera, I like that idea on your quote part, sounds very good and I will add something like it too! Do you think I should make more reference to the fact that I am a Professional member of the AMTA and that I am also a member of my local chamber of commerce?? I think adding information about the associations you belong to would be a great idea. The more professional the better.

I tried to link the ABMP logo onto my site (they provided the address link), but it didn't work. I would like to figure it out sometime.

I've already previously stated that I think you should remove the " In the privacy of my home," comment. You seem to stress "Private" on a few pages - private = discrete = extras..... 'Private "Spa Parties"' with no explanation of what spa parties are, having it it quotes, and emphasising 'private' makes it all a bit nudge nugde wink wink. Do PTs, chiropractors etc stress "private"?

Even though you describe what a full body session is, "full body massage" is used as a common phrase for extras, people search for it. You use "full body massage" in a few places in your site, not all explain what it does not include. I'd recommend changing that phrase to just something like "a one hour treatment".

Regardless of what else you have on the page, someone looking for extras will be looking for the key words used for extras "private", "discrete" and "full body massage" are some of the biggies. I think "service" is also a bit of a key word to people looking for extras.

You've got a mixture of refering to your business as Body Kneads Massage Therapy and as Lisa Moore. I'd change it to refer to Body Kneads Massage Therapy more. Make it less about you.
I would also recommend you turn it into more of a "we provide..." "all out therapists..." You could keep the "about Lisa" page, but say you are the owner and primary therapist. Change "my studio" to "our studio". Sole practitioners workign out of home are more likely to provide extras as far as the extra request portion of the population thinks. Remove references to home and that it is only you and it immediately looks bigger, more professional and legit.

I found with Yahoo local search, it will just display anything that matches one of a few words, I've had a couple of late night calls I've not answered, and when I've checked my web site log it's indicated someone has used yahoo local search for "nude massage" or "erotic massage" even though the site goes into detail about pregnancy massage and hot stone massage and "erotic" and "nude" appear nowhere in the local search listing or on the web site, some dodo will still go "my search results have given me exactly what I want even if it doesn't look quite like I was expecting..." Do you use Yahoo or Google Local Search?

I really loved your web-site. Those persons would have to really try and take what is worded there and make it so you would do sexual massage. I can't say enough that I just really liked how you did your site- very professional.

The internet IS the realm of that type of massage, the web is as it is today basically because of adult services - they put sooooooo much money into it developing websites etc. Those annoying little pop-ups on most web sites were developed for adult sites, now most of them seem to be screen savers and emoticons, but they certainly weren't the driving force behind the development of pop-ups. If there were no online adult sites as early adopters of the internet, it would not be where it is today.

Message boards like this were basically developed for anonymous talk - anonymous talk about adult things. Less than 10 years ago, it would be hard to find a small web site that wasn't adult services orientated. Basically any legitimate business is encroaching on the traditional use of the internet. As adult services have become less of a perceneforum.xxxe of the internet, people look for key phrase, include those key phrases, like "full body massage", and it doesn't matter how much unrelated stuff you have on the page - all they see are the key phrases, add a few references to how discrete the whole service is and a web site is bound to get a few phone calls, maybe not as much as one that advertised with more explicit details, but some people are looking for the more discrete option than somewhere with a flashing neon sign out the front offering 24hr service.

I recently heard on the radio one of those radio joke calls - they rang up one of those 24hr service places asking about getting their car serviced, took a while for the girl on the phone to understand what they were asking for LOL!
