Hi all!  I was just offered a position in a chiropractors office near my home.  I will be working there 1 morning and 1 afternoon during the week to start, as they only have 2-5 clients/week.  The therapist that they have now lives a long way from the office, and she just isn't working out.  So, they offered me the position, which I accepted.  It's a 65/35 split (I get 65%) and they are providing the room and table, with sink, furniture, etc., but I have to provide the rest, which isn't a big deal.However, I was discussing the details with the office manager and she wants me to work with her on getting new clients in for massages.  I suggested offering a discount on chiropractic services when they get a massage and vice versa, but what I'd like to do is mail a postcard to all of the chiropractic clients and introduce myself, and invite them in for a massage, say 10% off their first visit or something like that.  Does anyone have any additional suggestions on what I can do to get more recognition for the massages?  Also, who should pay for the mailing?  The office or me?

Hi Just my 2 centsI currently work in a chiro office with a 70/30 split.They pay all bills, have a receptionist to do most scheduling, I have access to all facilities (computer, phone, kitchen, bath) and I supply my linens, lotion, music tools etc.  I massage the chiropractors and their share of the massage ie $15 is waived and the remainder $35 is deducted from my rent.  I sent an introduction letter with $10 off their first massage coupon.  I paid for poseforum.xxxe, made the post cards on their computer and I bought the card stock.  When a person with a coupon comes in The chiros get their 30% off of what ever I charge.  Its only taken 1 yearfor me to build my client base from 5 a week to 25 a week.

I think the office should pay for the mailings. I also work with a chiropractor and have a situation similar to yours, although you got a better split. Anyways, I am hungry to get clients (and $$), too. I have come up with some strategies that you may want to consider.Call up all of the chiro patients and introduce yourself and your services with a discount. Do a mailing at the same time.Check out your 5-mile area. Are there coffee shops? Book stores? Fitness gyms? Maybe you could do chair massage there one day a month/two weeks to get your name out.How many apartment complexes are in your area? Maybe you can offer new residents a discount thru the apartment manager.My chiro is really into volunteering free chair massages at local events and that garners alot of attention. Find out if there are events in your area that you can volunteer at. Other ideas I'm working at: Magnetic signs on my car and t-shirts from iron-on printing paper. It's cheap and passive for an introvert like me.Dana

I also work for a chiro.  I've been jumbling around ideas too, but couldn't come up with anything new.  I love your postcard idea.  I already do chair massages and have done info pamphlets.   You guys might like those....they are tri-fold, on the frone is my name, #, and address...when you open it I give a detailed small paragraph about what to look foward to when getting a massage from me.   I talk about draping, pressure, or questions they might have should be addressed.  Basicaly I just did a walk thru of a typical session with me, but I also let them know that each individual session is different because everyone is their own individual.   Anyway hope this helps.Mel

Hello Everyone,Well, last week it finally happened.  There was an actual ad in the newspaper for a massage therapist position in a chiropractor's office.  I sent my resume in and will be going in for my interview on Thursday.I must say that this is the first ad that I have seen for a massage therapy position in this area (and we have many MT's).  I'm sure there may be quite a few MT's applying.Does anyone have any suggestions or input on how I should go about this interview?  I have to do a massage on the chiropractor and his assistant.  I also know that compensation will be mentioned or asked about.  What is a good perceneforum.xxxe?  I worked for a chiropractor before and he supplied everything, but he wanted me to be an employee and the pay was very minimal (I received $25/hr.), also the hours were limited to 3 a week and the massages took place after 9 pm on most nights.I felt as though I was being taken advaneforum.xxxe of and I ended up quitting.  I don't want another experience like that to happen again and this means so much to me.  If everything works out and I get this position-I could possibly quit my current day job.Just the idea of reaching my goal-full time massage position...is very exciting to me.Your help and guidance, as always, is very much appreciated!Melanie

Melanie,First, I have to say the arrangement at your prior chiro office is the squirreliest I have ever heard.As far as the interview goes, write down what you would like to get from the relationship, take notes about what the DC wants and understand where gaps lie between the two positions.  Understand what you are willing to give up in order to form a good working relationship.  Be up front and tell him/her of the differences, and in a highly competitive situation make sure he/she knows where you have compromised.  Just like in buying a house in a competitive situation, price is not usually the discriminator, but it is the other factors (like willingness to compromise) that will clinch the deal.If there are a lot of applicants, I would try to get there first.  If the chiro and asst get a massage from each applicant (what a great idea!), the first will probably be the one remembered the longest, and the one that sets the standard.Good Luck, and I hope your competition is not reading this.

I totally agree with Basic Kneads.  Be very confident, but not cocky.  Offer massages to them.  Let them know working on them is a must.  The better they know how you work the more they will be willing to hire you.  My chiropractor and I trade work.  That's the benifit of having a chiro who is a Dr. but is also a good person at heart!...Needless to say, I worked with a "money grubbing" one for 2 years before I'd had enough.  Oh, and firm hand shake!  They love that!

Wear a pair of nice black pants. I have some that are elastic waisted and are very comfortable. Also flattering. And a nice top. Not too bright or busy. Just use your common sense. Be clean and have trimmed fingernails. Make sure your hair looks good and won't be in the way. You know, the basics.Keep us posted!
