Lavender allergy?

I am allergic to lavender in general. not just the oil but if i touch the plant i come out in nasty hives and if i inhale or eat anything with it e.g. air-freshener/herbal drink, my throat gets blocked up with a thick mucus stuff and i get quite a chesty cough. I haven't had any test, but i have narrowed it down to lavender because all my reactions seem to take place after i take lavender.

i haven't really experienced swelling, but then again, my reaction could be completely different from yours.

Sadly this type of thing may become more common, especially with the more well-known essential oils such as lavender.

It's very hard to avoid products purporting to be "aromatherapy", just becuase they smell of lavender or chamomile but most are actually full of artificial or doctored derivatives of essential oils.

The overuse by many manufacturers of chemical components found in essential oils will increase sensitivity to these and cause issues when people use essential oils. It has the potential to make an aromatherapist's job much harder.

I would suggest that if you want to use products which include essential oils, the best route is to use a reputable producer who avoids the nasties found in products, not one of the big companies getting on the bandwagon. Or visit a qualified aromatherapist who may be able to help.

And not all essential oil suppliers are created equal! Adulteration is definitely out there.....

On a final note, I recently came across a "therapeutic" shampoo from a major manufacturer to help with a flaky scalp. This product is sold as being clinically tested and designed for use with this condition. However, it contains a well-known skin irritant as a foaming agent. Side effects are known to include drying and flaking of the skin.

When it comes to making money, it seems the big guys are happy to cut corners which could effect your health.
