Anyone been out to Western China? I understand its moslem and traditions are different. What are people like and what can one expect if one were to visit the place in comparison to Beijing, Xian, Shanghai or Shenzen?

Guys.. I will bet this is the most interesting post of all time... I can'y stop laughing reading this.

I can imagine the kind of things you guys see. I do travel to China too for business once in a while, but all the facilites are in major cities - Dong Guan, Shunde, Zhuhai, Kunshan and Shanghai. Thank god I don't need to travel to the rural area.

I hope I have a chance to work in China for a years in the future.. just for life experience.

A friend of mine was telling me his story... he is on temporary assigment in Shenzhen. One day he was in the line, waiting for bus/taxi.. a girl was standing in front of him...from behind.. looks cute and nice body... he gave her an 8...later he got a chance to look at her face.. damn cute.. upgrade to 9.5. 10 seconds later.. he was day dreaming, suddenly the girl.. 'wuekk" and spit on the floor.. almost hit him... hahaha.... and his comment to me was, regardless how pretty/cute chinese girl is, thier habits is a HUGE turn off...

Thanks for the advice, I'll be ok though. I met her here in Singapore and she is actually has Singaporean citizenship she's been here so long so her parents know they can't hold her to the typically traditional Chinese customs (plus her two brothers both live with women they're not married to and have kids with them too, which the parents are not overly keen on but can do nothing about either). If we did get married they would also not expect to receive money, her family being upper-middle class would never expect that, she's told me it's just what the poorest families do but no-one else follows that old tradition anymore, at least no-one in her family's circles. Hell, I'm angling for her old man to buy us a house if we do get hitched

I know what you guys mean. The bathrooms really stink! I was in the Forbidden City in Beijing this April, and the entrance to one of the bathroom had 4 Stars, I think the stars were for how much it stunk from 1 to 5 stars because it really earned the 4. Right outside in the open, a little boy was squatting and taking a dump. Lots of kids have crotchless pants so they can just squat and go anytime and anywhere they want since diapers are probably too expensive for the poor locals. Women/men hok loogies everywhere! The newer generation doesn't really do that, it's the old folks that's used to the old ways that spits/pisses/shits everywhere. It's not as bad in big cities, I'm glad I didn't get to experience the bus dump though.

Man I thought India is the most unhygienic place on earth. One of my friends once told me about his experience while traveling in India in the train. Every time I remember it I want throw up. When the train has stopped at of the station he has looked outside through windows. To his horror he has seen two adult women were doing it into two tin cans in front of the station while talking to each other. While other people were just walking around as if it not their problem. I know here we are still a developing nation. Of cause our hygienic standards are not up that of Japan or other developed nations. But you will never experience anything like that in here.

I rode the bus with the migrant workers many times, and those do tend to be the most interesting people....

First thing I was taught by a HK-Chinese friend in a restaurant, was to take the first can of green tea and use it for washing the chopsticks, the porcelain-spoon and the little bowl that is set on your place.

The restaurant usually provides with the first can of tea a big bowl, into which the "washing"-tea can go.

Only the second can of tea is for drinking.

It is also common practise to wipe everything off from which you eat with the paper-napkins that are on the table.


Shitting... Thank god, never witnessed that. But I remember from a bus-trip from Yishang (close to the 3-Gorges-Dam) to Wuhan (capital of Hubei province) the following:

Central Bus station in Yishang: Big and clean and modern overland bus takes about 15 to 18 people. They scatter around the bus, a few here, a few there some in the back, some in the front. All more or less respectable looking people.

Next station, another 10 people get on the bus and also sit where they like.

Then, before we reach the 3rd and last bus-stop before we leave Yishang, the bus stops at a red traffic light and the bus-driver jumps out of his seat and starts to holler around in the bus and suddenly all passengers move up to the front and one row of seats behind the last rearmost seated persons is filled with all kinds of luggage, so that nobody can sit there. - A buffer-zone...

My Chinese friend explains to me upon my asking, that the busdriver knew that the last station would only have migration-workers getting on the bus and he did not want any of them sitting up front - only in the back.

When we came to the station, indeed the migration-workers (the poorest of all Chinese and the most exploited ones!) got on the bus and they were a seedy looking crowd.

Without wanting to offend any of them, I could understand the busdriver´s "Arpatheid"-rally, when I saw and smelled them.

So, China for me is a country full of contradictions and sometimes you just have to close your eyes to some things.

Monty, how is the cleanliness of the toilets/restrooms in the offices or in the factories? So far I have always managed to only shit into my hotel room´s toilet... and that was always clean.

I have thankfully never seen anyone dropping a deuce in public in my 3 trips to China. Seeing those damn holes in the ground is traumatizing enough.

Also, back in 2000 in Fujian and Guangzhou, the bathrooms (even in nice restaurants) smelled like HELL. I thought I was going to be rich by inventing the toilet cake in China. ChangPing didn't have that problem though.

As for loogie swallowing, snot rockets, yes, I definitely saw that in 2000 in Fujian/GZ and in 2006 in ChangPing. I always found it gross that a pretty girl could give me a sexy look, grab my homey, and then turn away and make a disgusting-sound-like-a-400lb-hobo-snot-sucking-and-spitting-noise before going down on me.

By 2008 in ChangPing though the loogie hawking was gone, at least in the mongering type areas.

Hey Jocko... I have a beautiful Chinese lady. We met in Shanghai, also a Bar Girl at the time, but she now lives in Northern China with her family. Soooooo, you also took a girl out of the Bar Girl business? Does it ever bother you that she spent time with other guys? We both realize that we will probably never be officially married. Also, her parents would NEVER approve of her marrying a Western guy. Therefore, we keep it all a secret! BTW, I have read other posts, and must agree that not ALL Chinese are clean. My girl is extremely clean! She will bathe numerous times everyday! She also expects me to shower before any sexual contact. I have had experience with other girls before meeting my Chinese Love. Except for one young girl, the others were generally very clean with no tell tale odors (haha). Good luck with your relationship!!! I fully agree that you can never visit the parents unless you are fully committed to marrying her. And yes, once you do agree to marry then you are also responsible to give the parents a large amount of money for her hand in marriage!

There are nine of us expats that meet regularly, and we have all had similar experiences.
Anyway, whatever their habits, it is certainly not to western standards.

It was explained to me that one of the reasons that Chinese take their shoes off before entering a home is because they know that their shoes are dirty with the spit and crap that is on the streets.

It may be like this in small cities or your city however nothing like this in the big cities like Beijing, Shenzhen, etc.

Most Chinese are fairly clean in the big city. Most Chinese I know bath at least once per day and they do wipe after using the bathroom.

A few weeks ago I went to visit a Supplier in Guangdong province. I took the bus from Shenzhen as I was too cheap to go by taxi. The distance to the factory was about 100 miles.
After riding in the bus for about 1 hour, I smelled that something weird was going on in the back of the bus. A guy who looked like a construction worker on the way back to his province...

...unfolded a newspaper on the floor
...dropped his pants
...took a dump
...folded the newspaper
...threw the newspaper out of the window

I almost puked, but nobone else, even the people sitting on the right and on the left of where it took place, seemed to feel annoyed in any way.
