Are they similar places to the Shanghai hotel Massage? i.e. safe, clean - not dingy, unsafe places that would worry me to go into..

What a shame - and I was so looking forward to my stay - didn't even stay at the Shanghai on my last visit but thought I'd book it this time because I spent a fair amount of time in there ;o)

I don't really know Shanghai that well - only been once before and only went to Shanghai Hotel for massage since that was all I knew from this forum.

Any chaps out there that could recommend a similar experience to the Shanghai Hotel that isn't too difficult to find??

A bit late, but for those who didn't know, the PSB had a crackdown about a week and a half ago at about 1am (I think this was the same day JW510 ran into the plain-clothes police). On a related note, I heard from some of the supervisors and managers that by November of this year, they'll be closing a lot of the saunas and massage parlors b/c of the Expo next year Will just have to wait and see

there used to be a sauna place across the urumaqi lu from the hotel. It's like a private drive way with an open gate and an arch on top. You walk straight in and it's on the right side. the other place is 209 urumaqi lu which is 5 min. walk from the hotel.

Dunhill I would recommend rebooking your hotel. sauna/massage floor at the SH Hotel - permanetly closed.

I have been staying at the SHH for years now and overlooked the dingy carpet, scuffed walls, poor service (on the executive floors) for the convieance of a great massage at the end of a busy day.

I checked into SHH with eager expectations until went to check out the sauna - closed, routed me to floor 3.

Off the elevator sat a thugish guy at a desk piled with paperwork (wtf is that about!?!)? pointed me in the direction at the end of the hall to a brightly lite foot massage area, small with few girls wearing schoolgirl uniforms, stockings (pantihoes) (yuk), mini skirt and white blouse. I saw only 3 scurring about - 6-8 ish on the scale. A 6 showed me the menu. 240 for 60 min, 500 for 90min "special" message, wtf taking one for the team here, I went for the 90min.

Overweight 6ish girls takes me to a room (I ask for a differant girl but no reply) with 2 beds (curtain seperating the beds), a shower, small, dingy, where I get a good massage and HE. Roaming hands - extra 300.

AVOID but I'm here for couple more weeks, if anyone can please advise good bbs or hotel room service for a quick in and out without the expense and drama of LE.

Something simmilar happened to me. They handed over a 2000 rmb bill after the interview. I am about 180 cm. When I got the bill, i just broght an intense anger to my face and the others precieved it as if I was compleetly crazy. When I approached the door, I just looked the dorman in the eyes and screemed as loud and threatning as I could NO and pushed hime aside. He got scared for a sec, and I walked out.
I do not think they will dare to actually try to beat a forigner up, because it is more trouble and no point.

Yes I was in the room and it wasn't alot of fun when I found out who they were as I'd already asked them in broken Chinese what the fuck they thought they were doing. Nope there was no warning, the door just opened and in they came although I could hear some noisy arguing going on in Chinese and the masseur looked worried when she heard it. I thought the door was locked but I think they had unlocked it from the outside, it was one of those bathroom type locks. Not been back since even though nothing happened to me.

Hi JW, I'm just curious, were you in the room already? usually the door is locked and cannot be opened from outside. did the sauna attendents open the door for them? was there any alarm? I'm just curious how plain cloth police can come in without identifying themselves and without tripping an alarm.

It is getting tighter, I was in a rub and tug massage place in Pudong when two plain clothes police came in. Luckily I still had thespa's silky shorts on and the girl was still fully dressed so they just moved on.

The scam where they take you to a room on the promise of girls, cheap beer or some other temptation is very common in China's big cities. It also occurs in Vietnam.
In Vietnam if you don't consume anything and try to get out early on they will let you go, or you can easily force your way out. Unfortunately I found this not to be the case in Shanghai, and the meat heads seem to be bigger and more organised than Vietnam. While trying to force my way out I was pushed on to a beer glass which shattered sending glass through my hand. They let me go after 400RMB, and I got that back plus some medical expenses (but not all of it) when I went to the police and the bar's manager was called in. But it sort of fucked things up for me (I was there as a tourist and trying to carry luggage around with an injured hand was not fun, nor was the Chinese hospital experience).
Generally it's the basic rule "if the price is too good, then it probably is". I must have had a hundred of such scammers approach me along Nanjing Road. They are also around Houhai in BJ.
Certainly if they are taking you to see girls but refuse to come to your hotel you should start to be aware. Anything KTV or private room out the back is almost certainly a scam and get out ASAP. Usually if you have to walk along way with them it is often a scam.
The police will generally help you, but if you can't speak Chinese or are not that great at speaking it, it can be problematic. They even got one of the scam bar's workers to do the translating and taking me to the hospital, which I found worrying.

I can confirm hat things have tightened. I just was leaving SH Hotel a few weeks ago and a whole goup of cops just walked out of the elevator on the 4th floor.

I recently passed by the Sauna in Fuxing Lu which is closed down as well. The guy in front told me that they will open again next month. Somehow I believe the lock down of these places is more related to H1N1 then the Expo in 2010 - but thats just a guess.

Still not a problem. Going forward, safer locations are away from downtown, such as Hong Qiao area and South such as Wuzhoung etc.
