Putin was not happy with the fall of the Soviet Union and wants to re-establish that system or replicate it on some other fashion so long as it is an autocratic system and not democratic. From a timing perspective, Russia invaded Crimea and Eastern Ukraine back in 2014 and has been at war, without ever declaring war, ever since. The West stood back for the most part. With Trump working to weaken NATO and threatening to get out altogether Putin felt more emboldened that he could invade and NATO and the West would sit back again. Second, Putin’s own existence and control of power is based on Autocratic rule. With more and more Democratic systems appearing right on his doorstep the offers visible alternatives to the Russian people that might question autocratic rule and Putin maintaining power. The fact that many of those are NATO countries right on his borders that puts more pressure on him and raises tensions.




Ukraine wants democratic rule and to join NATO. They were invaded and are fighting on their own land to repel the invaders and recapture the lands lost in 2014. This gives the Ukrainians a big advantage. When you fight for you own lands you will fight harder and never give up because where else will you go.

It will be a long war and one of attrition. So long as Ukraine can keep getting ammunition and weapons from the West, it is only a matter of time before Russia loses. The more troops and equipment Russia loses and cannot replace, the weaker they become elsewhere.

Oh yeah.

It’s always harder to attack then defend. In military science they say to successfully attack a defender you need to have at least a 3-to-1 superiority in numbers to be successful. But, you can’t just attack, you have to hold so that means reinforcements. Russia is laying minefields (anti-tank mines and anti-personal mines) that will need to be cleared. But before an attack, Ukraine needs to either control the air or make it even otherwise Russian jets and drones can take out those advancing tanks. That is why they want the F-16 that is both air-to-air and air-to-ground. To help keep Russian jets under control or attack Russian tanks and defenses on the ground. Ukraine needs to keep softening the enemy. Take out their air defence, radar, artillery systems, rocket launchers and the ships in the Black Sea that can fire missiles at a rate faster than they can replace them. Also, winter is coming. Tanks don’t do well in the mud (Spring and Late Fall). Best time to attack with tanks is when the ground is firm. So, mid winter before the melt of summer after the ground is not muddy. The F-16s won’t be ready to support a 2024 winter attack. So, don’t expect any major push until Summer/Fall 2024 or Winter 2025.

The chassis is based on the Leopard 1 Tank. In the 2000s countries started to phase out this weapon system and focus more on MANPAD (man portable air defence) systems like the Stinger missile as it was cheaper. In Ukraine, many more small cheaper drones are being sent to attack Ukraine. The 35mm shell itself is only a few dollars for each round. Earlier this year, Rheinmetall won a contract to produce 300,000 rounds. Delivery started in September

The are one of the systems protecting Ukrainian command and control centres by shooting down attacks from the air left right and centre. Once Ukraine is ready to attack, having these on the battlefield will help protect the tanks from air attacks.

Russia has targeted Ukrainian power plants to cut of power and heat to Ukraine in the winter. This system helps protect those power plants.
