Interesting article that shows some of the various items Russia exports and some of the largest importers. Sometimes it is hard to know who is the one getting hurt by the sanctions, Russia or the country imposing the sanctions. Not hard to see why many of the European countries do not sanction the oil, gas, and coal imports from Russia. Not many countries are going to be able to replace the 4 million barrels of Russian oil.

Many of the Russian soldiers are conscripts (draftees) that had no idea they were going to war. They are being used as cannon fodder. There are many videos of captured Russian soldiers out there remorseful for what is going on. Their moral is low and they are surrendering or hiding. Many say they have to fight or their our leaders will shoot them. That’s why you now have Syrians coming to join the fight for $600/month when they only get $15/month now with no way out of poverty. Those Syrians are willing to be cannon fodder and to die so that their families can live off the death benefits.

I agree, but would add that this is often true of most armies around the world. Many of the soldiers come from lower income families and take the job to help their families and don't always agree with the wars the political elite send them to fight.

If you look at the picture, the whole world is not sanctioning Russia, Still many countries trading with them. China and India make up a lot of the world population and both are buying oil, gas, and other items from Russia, heck even Mexico, the US's southern neighbour isn't sanctioning Russia. With China and India both working with Russia to trade in Rubles, Yuan, and Ruppees, being ejected from Swift doesn't even affect them. Saudi Arabia is talking with China about trading with them using the Yuan which will avoid using Swift and the US currency.

I'm not supporting Russia in the current situation but it is hard to see what is happening. Countries are finding ways to avoid using Swift and the US currency. This is not a good thing for the US or sanctions. The whole reason to cut off the use of Swift was so they could not trade with anyone, well, that is not the case, it is just driving countries to find alternatives. Using the alternatives drives down the US dollar.

First, that is Russia’s map singling out the EU, NATO and “Western” (I guess in this case Japan and South Korean are Western) developed countries. Just because countries are not on that trap does mean they actually “support” Russia.

Here are the list of countries that voted on the UN resolution to condemn Russia’s invasion.. Most countries condemned Russia, a few puppet sites rejected the resolution, and others abstained so as not to take a side or risking upsetting Russia. But, those countries will be under political pressure from the US, EU and West about doing too much business with Russia. Other countries can ramp up oil, grain and mineral production to offset lower Russian exports but that will take time. The US alone can ramp up wheat production for example but they would have to subsidize it as many farmers are making corn for ethanol used as additives to gas and it’s lucrative. They won’t switch and lose money on their own. Although, as cars move to electric, their ethanol market will dwindle over time anyway.

I get what you are saying, but if countries are not sanctioning Russia and continue to trade with them, then they are really only paying lip service to the UN. Similar to the Paris climate accords where everyone signs up to reduce emissions then they go away and emissions continue to rise. Yes the US is trying to exert pressure on various countries to reduce or eliminate trade with Russia, but so far they are not having a lot of influence. Both India and China have continued trade and some articles have pointed out that oil and gas exports to those two countries have actually increased. So they may not be supporting the Russian incursion into Ukraine, but they are not doing anything to punish Russia either. The European countries are in a difficult position, until they can change from using Russian supplied oil, gas, and coal they need to continue buying from Russia. Changing where they get the supply or what type of energy they use is not a quick fix. It can be done, but just not quickly, we are talking years.

I agree about other countries could step up and replace some of the items Russia exports, especially wheat. Although not all countries have the various minerals or oil to do so. The countries that do are not going to ramp up for a short period of time as the cost to start the production would be too high without some guarantees of longer term contracts. Starting up a new mining operation is not cheap. Canada is actually a large exporter of Potash and could ramp up production but without some long term contracts I don't think they would go to the expense, not to mention the government hurdles. Just a few years ago Nutrian (the old Potash) company shut down one of their operations in New Brunswick because there was so much product on the market. The northern part of Ontario has an abundance of natural resources but no one is going to spend the amount of money required to start up operations there unless there were some guarantees. Various provincial governments have been talking for years about investing there but none have done much.

There is something called a demographic crisis or time bomb and China is about to encounter the mother of them all. They might have a window of a couple more decades of good growth but even thats not a given. What almost is a given is a sustain economic collapse by 2050 and thereafter when a massive 2/5th's of their entire population - over half a billion people - will be over retirement age. This will be an absolutely massive drain on growth and will be the start of a huge population decline. By the end of the 21st China's population is predicted to be cut in half.

It's a problem that Japan is facing right now and is a big reason for Japan's economic stagnation. Unless they can reverse their birth rate (or discover the fountain of youth) this problem is unavoidable. Unfortunately that's not likely to happen because the richer people are the lower the birth rates trend to be. Their birth rate is already terrible despite being only a middle income nation on a per capita basis. As their population continues to decline so to will their birth rate which is already well below replacement levels.

Western economies are facing the same problem, HOWEVER there is another way to solve this problem- immigration. And thankfully unlike autocratic nations like China and Russia most western nations have high levels of immigration which is what keeps their demographics stable.

Many predictions about the future have ended up being false and technology does not often develop the way we think it will. People predicted there would be flying cars and modular nuclear reactors would be powering just about everything by now, clearly not the case.
