I stay at the Hilton, and have never had a problem bringing my steady Filipino gf back.. but last week the security stopped us, and wanted her to register... We told him she was already registered and her PP was in the room.. The next day I talked with the exec lounge manager, and he told me the police issued a new policy and need to record all visitors to the hotel after 11... even if you are just going up to the bar or restaurant... if they don't follow it, they will get a heavy fine. I gave him my gf's passport and he registered her in my room...

The next day, we came back with her, a friend of mine and one of her gf's. They just made her gf show her pp and wrote the information down on a list.. along with his room number.. not a real hassle...

UPDATE: The Hilton posted a large notice from the police by their elevators today. It is in English and Chinese... basically saying new security procedures will be in effect during the Expo... It clearly states that visitors will not be allowed to the rooms after 11pm. If a visitor comes before 11-m, they must show a valid ID, or not allowed in. It also says if a visitor goes to the room before 11pm, they must come out by 11pm.

I think my friend was able to get the girl up last week, as I don't think this goes into full affect until the Expo opens...

Could be trouble for bringing ONS to your room... If you have a steady girl, you will need to register her with you when you check in.

There were undercover police at Manhattan last weekend as well. I am not sure exactly how management knows but Chinese men are generally in the minority anyway so that may be one clue. It is interesting that they would not let the Filipinas in. They stopped allowing ladyboys in after the sedative-laced chocolate incident where 5 ladyboys were caught stealing from their clients (this is why so many ladyboys have been at Judy's). The police have given two other warnings to Manhattan...the dancers can no longer just dance in swim wear (they are now pretty well dressed) and they can't pole dance. They supposedly can dance around the poles just not up them. Go figure. I noticed a few more "barber shops" are closed. Fake DVD shops are closing in Xuhui. Western hotels are not allowing prostitutes in. Some FLs are screening their clients...if they are in hotels, they may not try to go with them. The girlee bars on Changyi lu in Pudong were nearly closed.

Better City, Better Life? I am hoping the city lets us have DaTong (Julu Rd) where our iniquities are not publicly displayed but hidden underground. Many of us are slaves to our work. We need an outlet where we can recharge with the excitement generated by fooling around with young ladies.

Friday night there was a tip off that the police were cracking down on Philippino girls that had outstayed their visa. My mate has a bar (we should go Fluky) and he has Philippino girs there however all of his are within thier isa so no worries

Nice post, but it seems if everyone in the bar knew they were cops, they were not that "undercover." What gave them away as being cops?

Last night there were several under cover police in Manhattan buying expensive champagne and trying to lure the prostitutes... The management recognized it, so they "did not allow Filipino's in " ..... they were protecting the girls, as they are important to their business... Later that night (about 1:30) the police were gone, and they let them in again. Not sure if the arrested any girls..

Whenever you go it's going to be packed although during the week will be less crowded but only marginaly so. The China pavillion is a must, as is the British but the whole expo will be pretty spectacular. Also plan to have a day time visit as well as an evening as Expo takes on a different atmosphere then.

As regards mongering it is too early to say what will happen. It's all fairly quiet at the moment with regard to raids. There are plenty of BBS closed down but there are still loads around as well. As AsiaTraveller wisely points out, they are just less visible now so locals know where they are but tourists won't. What I have also noticed is that alot of the foot massage places are starting to offer extras. These places are less blatant and therefore seem to be tolerated more.

On my next trip my hotel is giving me two ticket for the expo. Any advice for the resident Shanghai people on which days are better to attend (i.e. weekdays vs weekends).

I was thinking to do the mongering on the weekdays, where it is less crowded and then do the expo on the weekend.

Any advice? Also, is there any must see exhibits this year that is the rave of the chinese daily newspaper?

Because no other business wants to be on the 4th floor. The number 4 is unlucky, because it sounds like "death". So the 4th floor would be empty on most buildings. Or you put the sauna there where lao wai don't really care about the numeric superstitions of China.

Many of the dodgy BBS within the inner ring road have already been closed. The places remaining are generally tucked away under bridges or elevated roads. I wrote last year that (during the Expo, at least), it will be necessary to travel further out from the CBD to find any action.

The government is doing well (from their perspective anyway...) to close businesses visibly offering sex. But removing the supply is the easy part. Changing demand is impossible. And like anything, where there's a demand, supply will follow as girls/business owners look to cash-in on the shoreforum.xxxe.

I don't think the Chinese government has an ethical problem with sex businesses. The over-riding factor is face and reputation. The thought that prudish western tourists might report back to friends & family upon their return home, that China is awash with houses of ill repute.

As I've written before on here, as the weather picks up, don't be afraid to travel out of the CBD. Buy a cheap bicycle or catch the subway to the end of Line X, and have a walk around. Be adventurous. The locals in low-key areas outside the middle ring road won't be abstaining during the Expo, that's for sure. You might find a real gem. I'm sure these places will be happy to see you!

I think that the more established places like BoAnn, 999 and G18 will be doing business during the expo without incident. My take is that most travelers to the Expo will not have a clue about these places (unless they read this board), since the client base is mostly chinese and asian business men anyway. I could be wrong, but my gut is that these places are well connected with the local government and provides a needed service to their citizens.

From a world public relations perspective, the last thing China wants to do is arrest foreign travelers visiting their city for the Expo. My guess is that they will clean up anything that is visible (i.e. street level barbershop and massage type places) to pedistrian trafic.

From what I have seen as a business traveler, most of the four and five star hotels cater to business men from Asia and I don't see that changing -especially during the Expo.

Then again I could be wrong -- just my two cents.

About 2 years ago, a friend of mine did 10 days in jail for driving a scooter without a license. He met two foreigners in there that got caught with a prostitute. Not sure if it was during the act or not, but their sentence was 15 days. You also don't get a phone call.

That's probably the maximum penalty tho, I think it kind of depends on what the mood is at the time. During a raid, I think they just cart off everybody that isn't fully dressed and work out the details later. Two female friends of mine were in a sauna for a regular massage that got raided in Qingdao (they didn't even know it was that kind of sauna) but they were just let go.

Have heard of some Japanese guys getting caught and their company getting a call, after which they were sent back to Japan.

In the end, it probably all depends on how well connected the owner of the sauna is. He's allways going to try and bail his customers out first. The guy from Yaohong (ex-Jiyuan) can do it the same day. All sort of depends on how strict they're going to be during the Expo tho, I'd be very careful.

The BBS near where I live hace already seen increased activity. There are 7 within about a block and at one point they were all closed for about a week and have been since on and off. Now all but 3 are back in business. I had heard it was because of a new police boss here in Hongqaio. I would like to hear what kind issues would arise from being found in one during a raid. I can see walking away from one at a massgae with happy ending or licky massage type place but not from a BBS.

One WG who works at Manhattan told me she stopped carrying condoms because she has been told that policemen will assign a sentence of one year in prison for every condom found on a working girl. Sounds goofy to me, but she no longer carries a condom to work. She believes things will actually get better once the Expo begins.

Great Idea. I plan to visit the Expo in the May/June timeframe. I think that some of the bigger sauna's like 999 and G18 have an excellent process to warn the customers/girls before the cops come. From what I have seen, they all have a guard on the first floor with a radio. Then you have to take an elevator to the 4th floor. What is it with the 4th floor -- all the saunas are on the 4th floor. Anyway, once you get out of the elevator, the rooms are usually behind a desk and down a long hallway.

So I wonder what happens if the police barge in and all you are doing is getting a back rub?

It seems very likely to me that a bunch of places will be raided soon, so I figured we should keep a thread on what's happening where. Most girls I know allready suspect they'll have extended leave from somewhere in March.

I think Yaohang on Wuzhong lu is a bit safer than most as the boss is well connected and can get his clients out of jail the same day, but I'm not sure what happens to foreginers that get caught; I'm guessing worst case means the loss of your visa/residence permit.

For that reason, I'd strongly advise you steer clear of Sauna's & barber shops at peak times (after about 7-8 pm) Let's keep each other updated on what happens.
